Apologies to the mods if this is in the wrong part of the site. I only use the SCFC section.
My father is unwell, off work and house-bound (bar trips to the Brit ) and needs perking up.
Can anyone suggest a couple of decent nogger books. What is the name of the book thats based on Cloughie, the one thats much loved on here?? I've forgotten its name.
Despite being a Stoke fanatic he is also a big fan of the Busby era Man Utd team and the likes of Clough, Shankly, Stein, Nicholson, Blanchflower etc
Any books out about Stokies from the past? He has the usual Stan, Banks and Shilton ones.
Help appreciated.
Dave

The Damned United by David Peace is the Cloughie book - quality.
A good laugh is Gladys Protheroe-Football Genius. It is better than it sounds, trust me!
Richard Williams' Perfect 10 (10, although he cheats and includes 11, of the best playmakers ever) is a good read.
My father and other working class football heroes by Gary Imlach, although I have not read it myself, is also meant to be a quality look at 1950s footballers (his dad played for Forest).

Dave - a bit late in the day but I've often found ebay good for football books at reasonable prices. Main drawback is waiting and also that you may not want to pay the winning bid price!
Two to mention - Potters at War - story of the wartime seasons at the Vic and the Neil Franklin auto - Soccer at home and abroad reading copy on ebay currently.
Is your dad up here in the NE? If so would be happy to lend him any of my books during his recovery and convalescence. Most of my books ar 1940s-1960s which may not interest him but....
Just a thought

Best Football Books:-
Only A Game? By Eamon Dunphy.
The Glory Game by Hunter Davies.
The Beautiful Team (Can't remember the author's name. It's the story of the Brazil 1970 side)
My Favourite Year (Again I can't remember the editor's name. It's a collection of stories written by different fans about their respective teams and their favourite season, the good bit is there isn't a glory hunter amongst them!)

'My favourite year ' is a good read- think was the Watford story found very amusing written by the ball boy
'One hump or two' by Frank Worthington is what you'd expect from him but good fun.
There was one written by a guy who played in the lower leagues and had a stationary business- can't for the life of me remember the title. Good read- especially him turning up to play non-league games in his Rolls Royce

Baystokie, are you in Whitley Bay?? Bit late like mate but Im off down to Preston tomorrow on the train. Ive taken the day off. Cooked breakfast at SugarLoaf, pint in the Rockcliffe and Metro to get the train to Carlisle.
A lad called Pete is giving me a lift back, he lives in Seaton Sluice. He wont have a problem carrying another Stokie back to the Toon. I live in Cullercoats.
My old man is 69, so the 50/60/70s is his era. He is down in Stoke. Ive ordered him The Damned United and a book about Best and Duncan Edwards off AMazon. Cheap as chips!
We should have a pint if you are in Whitley Bay mate.
Other away games on the roster are Watford and Wednesday.
PM if interested in the trip to PNE.
Cheers to other lads for the suggestions, much appreciated.

The Imlach book is a cracking one. Although it's not the intention, it almost makes you not hate the modern footballer for getting what he can out of the game.

Dave - thanks for the offer but as you say, bit late! Anyway, 'the management' have booked me for the next three days. I'm same age as your Dad so yes we go back further than I care to think.
Have a good trip and best wishes to your Dad.
I'm in Shiremoor, been here since '65. Will give you a reminder in the next week or two re a pint - Queen's Head?
