Notts County
What a day that was - makes me go all 'queer' thinking about it
I was at both games and the big difference was 15,000 people holding their breath compared to 700
Also this was Stoke back in the big time and of course the scores changing as the match wore on just shredded the nerves
What a day ;D
At Cardiff the rest of the crowd just wanted to stone us to death - and they did try bess there little woolly socks!
At Notts County the whole stadium was one giant party
Weird thing is I can't remember where I went after the game!!

We're destined to dick on whichever team he gets his grubby paws on, either in one of the cups or the league, I can feel it in my bones, stronger than my will to live.
I cannot wait to show him how I feel. Tickets for seats behind the dug-out will be in hot demand, if it's at home that is.
Please please let him get the job and us to draw Oldham in the FA cup at home next season!!!

Horton' s contract is up at the ende of the season and he hasn't been offered a new one yet. Cotters is out of work. 2+2=5

What made Notts County 1979 so much better for me was that I live near to Nottingham. What a high.
On the other hand does anyone remember us getting beaten 5-0 at County in the '50s and the only consolation that we had as we came off the ground was that we had beaten them 6-0 at the Vic earlier in the season.

Smudge, many thanks to the contributor of the photos and to you. That brought back a few memories and a silent tear. It was truly a great, great day. OS.

Notts C were good side that year as well. Real hard to beat at home. The week before we had that 0-0 with Newcastle when ironically Paul Richardson had a late goal ruled out.
Certainly was more exciting than Cadiff IMHO...was only 9 I think but remember that moment for ever.
couldn't have written a better script and after the Sunderland fiasco at the Vic as well.
sweet moment.

Great to see those photos.
It's astonishing to think, but before seeing those photos, I think I've barely seen half a dozen pictures of that game.
There's a famous one of Alan Durban at the final whistle, one of Richardson's winner in the SCFC encyclopaedia, and the programme for the following season had a photo of Paul Randall receiving treatment on the pitch at Meadow Lane, but other than those and a few from the Sentinel on the day of the game and the Monday after, that's about all I can remember. Even our official programme didn't publish any photos of the game in the first match the following season against Coventry.
Seems incredible when you consider that every game these days is recorded and available on video/DVD at the end of the season! In fact, come to think of it, why wasn't that game shown on Star Soccer? Were Aston Villa involved in a mid-table end of season runaround at Derby or something?

Great to see Disco Stu on the last pic
The annoying thing was Dave, "Kick Off" on Granada took Wrexhan v sunderland as a featured game, obviously from HTV but you think after showing us all season that year we might have got coverage.

Proud to say I was at Meadow Lane. Drove down from Sheff where I was at uni. For me that game, the '72 league cup semi reply at Old Trafford and the final, plus the Cardiff p/o victory at Ninian and the Millenium Final are days I'll treasure forever. The law of averages means that I'll get to have one or two more before they scatter my ashes on the pitch.

Smudge - Thanks for digging out the Notts County story ;D. The Notts County game is probably the one that brings back the strongest memories of joy as a Potters supporter for me. I've sampled the delights of Wembley and Millenium Stad but this day in Nottingham sticks like no other. As a fellow poster above says, it was the game that took us back into the old top flight and a whole season of hard work depended on it. I was a student at the time in Wolves and travelled to the match by train with a mate who is a Derby fan (they were travelling in the opposite direction to the mighty Potters at the time). I remember the Sunderland score coming through and the winning header and its the best mental I've ever had. It still brings shivers up my back. I met my Derby supporting mate on the way back (I think Derby had been relegate ;D). My wife (we met in Wolves) still talks about the inane grin I sat with all night in the bar and curry house in Wolves. The pictures bring back so many memories - particularly the demins. I have an embroided demin jacket here and my kids have actually taken it into school for history lessons ! Getting older but no-one can take that marvellous memory away from me.
