Looking back to the Macari era reminded me about unsung hero Carl Beeston who spent almost all his career at Stoke
Beeston was one of the top local lads of the past twenty years and for me ranks up with the Adrian Heaths and Lee Chapmans.
Beeston was constantly troubled by a dodgy ankle otherwise he would have played at the very top level. I believe he was selected for the England under 21's
The only honour he achieved was a Division 2 Champions medal with the Macari team of 92/3.
The Beest was part of the team which went on a 25 match unbeaten run. I remember at the end of the season our coaches arrived at Bolton and we were appplauded by the locals! We paid them back though by losing - they then gained promotion at the expense of Vale so we all went home happy
Beeston was of course denied a Wembley medal the previous season when that barsteward Gemmil got him sent off in the first leg of the playoffs at Stockport
A skilllful midfielder who could carry the ball forward as well as put his foot in when required. Easily wound up which was why he was sent off at Stockport.
Unsung hero; probably because of his dour manner, he rarely played to the crowd

He chipped the keeper from miles out away at Wigan,
and scored a cracker at the Deva stadium, in the championship season.

Known as the Rolls Royce to his colleagues and a full Egland U21 international. Could have been very special if not injury prone. Didn't seem to like playing early season and came to life in about February. Top player.

Wasn't he subject to a bit of grief from the boo boys at some point? Not a hate figure by any means but I seem to remember him attracting a fair few moans and snidey comments...mainly due to his injury and suspension record. Liked a flutter an all didn't he?
"We should have fucked him off when Wolves were after him" - I can almost here me old man saying it still.
I rated him, though not in the Paul Ware class...now he was a 90's midfield hero.

For some reason Warey was a boo boy,
I thought he was a cracking little player,
I saw him in Sandbach a few years ago, at a cash machine...spoke to him for about 20 mins.
He got shit on big time by Jordan BTW!

I used to get free tickets off the Beast for the Vic ;D
(Well he used to give them to my mates mum...)
He only ever seemed to score stunners for Stoke...didn't he only score 17?

Warey is one of the all-time favourite players at Oatcake HQ.
Like OWB says, he was shit on from a very big height by Joe Jordan, and the tragedy is that he moved to Stockport just days before Lou returned to the club. We did a big article about Warey in The Oatcake, and his family got in touch to thank us. Apparently he was very moved by our tribute to him.
In actual fact, I think I'm right in saying that he could have changed his mind on his move to Stockport, but he thought it was the right thing to do to move there as he'd given them his word.
I'm sure he would have done a good job in our midfield during Lou's second spell.

Paul Ware was a decent player but he wasn't good enough to play at the top level - look at his career after he left Stoke
Beeston would have played in the Prem had he been around today (and stayed fit)

Warey lad, now thats a name that brings back the very best of memories.
I will never forget the goal he scored at Peterbourgh in the final of the Autoglass Northern Final to take us to wembley for the first of the finals.
What a day, and a day I personally will never forget. ;D

shame he never got back to his best, he was close to it when we played Liverpool in the cup in 1994 (Rush twice, Pesch for us, lost 2-1) The next game I seem to remember was Wolves at home when we'd just signed Kevin Keen, our midfield was finally starting to look something at the time. Last memory of Beeston seems to be a panoramic photo in the Sentinel of the Stoke End in the last ever Potteries Derby, Sheron had just scored and Beeston was on his knees, arms in the air, facing the away supporters. Shame about Paul Ware, to look at what another player in Ray Wallace did under Lou, Ware could have been just as an important player for us.

Remember a typically stonking last-minute Beest volley to give us a 2-1 Boxing Day win v Newcastle, in what I think was Tony Ellis' debut?. ;D

Beat me too it Finchy - that was one of the best goals I've seen in the flesh. Seemed to bend upwards - a low drive that rose and flew into the roof of the net.
I believe he used to live down my mates road in Basford - BMX'd past him once or twice.

Beest is one of my all-time Stoke "heroes"...what a talented player. While I thought Warey was a crackin' player, he didn't have the "edge" that Beest had to his game. Seemed to be more of a "winning" mentality about him - like "this ball is going to be MINE and I'll risk injury to get it - would YOU?" kind of attitude....but there was more to his game than that - he could pick out some absolutely sublime through-balls - one against Ipswich in a 3-1 win at the Vic which sticks out...he curled a glorious pass in between the left back and left-sided centre-half for Sheron to run onto (and I think score)...I seem to recall it was Beeston's first game back from a bit of a long injury and he pulled off a pass like THAT! Jaw-droppingly skilful. Then the passion as he was bein' subbed in the 2-0 win over the Vale at the Vic, as he walked off he turned, arms raised, fists clenched to the Boothen! Aye...Carl Beeston - class.

Remember his debut against Coventry in the last game of the holcaust season. Think he had more shots at goal that game than our midfield had managed all season. Unfortunately then missed most of the next season with glandular fever. Was the victim of a dreadful knee high tackle against Reading at Easter in our promotion season, which put him out for ages and from which he never seemed to really recover. Ended up as my Mums postman and was always willing to have a chat about Stoke. ;D

OWB & DaveF, you say "Ware was shit on by Jordan."
Surely being shit on by Jordan is Peter Andre's ultimate fantasy?

It was odd that Jordon refused to really give him a chance. He was a fine player. The ideal Lou player actually. box to box, tough tackling and could run all day and night. Oh yes, he could pass the ball and shoot as well.
