Is it really that violent? Really? I know many people like to have a bit of shock horror in their lives and the Daily Mail love to suggest we all one sideways glance away from a knife in the ribs but IMHO it's rubbish. It's no different than any other industrial city.

Hmm, not so sure about that Joe. I've lived in dodgy areas of London, Manchester and Brum briefly too, and stayed in parts of New York that were meant to be scary and for casual street violence, old-fashioned people getting their heads kicked in on a Friday or Saturday night, Hanley and at times Castle are way the worst I've seen and I really don't scare that easy.

Poor education, poor job asperations, not many places in Britiain as depressing as Stoke. I'm not making any excuses for crime and violence, but in terms of Britain, Stoke's one of the most boring/backwards places in England.

I don't see that at all though Sal. In fact I find it a lot safrer around here than it used to be. I've been here for two and a half months and been in the town centres at night but haven't seen any violence at all. I saw that Sentnull cover this morning then remembered who owns the aforementioned rag.

Fair enough you're always likely to see a fight if you go out in Hanley or Castle at a weekend but in terms of very serious violence (i.e. guns, knifes) I wouldn't say there is a massive problem in this area.

Seems to always have police dogs going nuts at folk whenever ya walk out of a bar in 'castle on a Friday night.

i've never experienced any problems like that ??? Having lived all over the city. Staffs police even commended us last season on our behaviour before the home games, during and afterwards. I'd have thought 27,000 footy fans would have been prime bait for inciting violence in the city but it didn't happen

To be honest, I think this area isn't as violent as it used to be. But scaremongering like that brilliant piece of journalism does indeed scare people.

Actually think I was there when that first vid happened.
Ended up with 3 of em chasing the other lot into town (the other lot had house bricks but ran off anyway), then somehow the guys chasing got the house bricks off em and came running round the corner from the museum.
Was a year ago mind, but sure I recognise the fat guy who tried whip his shirt off.

No....These figures are tiny in comparison to some. Take Halton Borough for example, a very small area with a population of 100,000 but with almost 3000 violent attacks ....3 TIMES the level of those reported. for North Staffordshire. Mind you it is cess pit of 'plastic scousers' ...CALM DOWN... CALM DOWN .There's a stabbing or three almost every weekend and it doesn't even make the front page.(It's the Irish lunatic ancestry if you ask me..)

For murders and gun crime and mafia activity etc New York and Chicago are obvioulsy going to be worse, London and Manchester is going to be worse for gun crime as well but as Sal said, for street brawling Ive not seen anywhere as bad as Stoke-On-Trent, Ive had many nights out in London, Manchester, Liverpool , Birmingham, Leeds etc and I can honestly say the smaller cities are far worse, I think it because the bigger cities have lads from all over the country visiting on a regular basis but places like Hanley tend to be local lads from the local area, Stoke On Trent is a small place and everyone on the Clubbin scene tend to know each other, for example, Meir lads bumping into Chell heath lads on a regular basis is always going to kick off, then if outsiders come into the City the locals arent used to it so they get territorial and kick off, Stoke is pretty poor in comparison to other cities and alot of people here just dont give a fuck, they've got nothing to loose and reputation means more to them than the opinions of some copper who doesnt understand them, alot of people have got a bad attitude , society breeds these people then moan when they kick off...

Stoke have arranged a meet with Tottenham on Sat afternoon, its always kept on the quiet these days, which surely is what people prefer anyway
