Cracking goal for Ireland last night + Lawrence had a good game too - both scored a 7 rating in the papers.
Me thinks Whelan has secured his place in the starting line up this Satdy ;D

They BOTH better had secured a place in the starting line uup on Saturday. I also think that West Ham is the ideal game to stick Tuncay in and see what he can do from the start of the game.

Lets hope tuncay, whelan and lawrence start.west ham look a very average side at best.compared to the likes of italy should be easy pickins for lawro and whelan.from what i have seen of west ham they look poor defensively

whelan came off after 70 minutes with a slight calf strain, he also got booked so will not be playing on wednesday. Didn't have an amazing game although obviously the goal was instrumental.
Lawrence had a good game, was constantly on the ball and did a good job on grosso, looked a little tired towards the end and his final ball started to falter.

from the bits i saw whelan was ok, not brilliant, but scored a great goal, got himself a stupid booking, which i thinks great as he wont be playing wednesday! as for liam personally i thought he was fantastic, id go as far as saying he was the best player on the pitch, i might be slightly biased but a great performance, seen trappatonis interview and he praised tho whole team but only actually mentioned liams name, well done son!

I still keep wondering what could have happened if we'd had Liam on against Everton. There were so many times when we broke down the right only to see Rory screw up the final pass. I really hope Liam's there against West Sham.

I thought Liam was as good as any of the other ROI players - very good game indeed

the worrying thing is, liam is bound to start on wednesday so no doubt pulis will rest him saturday! personally i think liam needs keep playing, hes one of them players that thrives of keeping playing and confidence! hes just starred against the world champion, pulis now needs to keep his run and confidence going! not play fucking delap instead!

As others have said, we look a much, much poorer side when Lawrence doesn't play.

Both Whelan and Lawrence are first-name starters in my Book.
Lawrence . Whelan . Arismendi . Etherington
Tuncay
Fuller
3 points in the bag against Wet Spam, move on and shock Spurs, then a nice easy game against Wolves. Thank you very much. 9 points. Top half. Simple as.

Hopefully Ireland will get a kind draw from the play-offs, unlikely though considering they are seeding it and that there are quite a few big guns likely going through the play-offs (france, portugal, russia etc).

Anyone else think that Ireland looked exactly like us? Flat-back four with static full-backs, a hard-working but largely one-dimensional midfield, and one tricky striker whose talents are under-utilised. And they scored from two set pieces ;D
Whelan and Lawro should start, but I've been saying that for weeks. I expect Tone will only start one of them, because we absolutely have to accommodate all of Etherington, Whitehead, and Delap.

Why delap Mikey? He was awful against Everton

Why delap Mikey? He was awful against Everton He was talking about Pulis' mindset, not his. Whelan and Delap is still the best central midfield partnership we have imo. How Whitehead gets a game every week is beyond me.

Why delap Mikey? He was awful against Everton IMO he remains the best central midfielder at the club alongside Whelan. I think that says more about the weakness of our central midfield than the quality of Delap though. Tone won't drop Delap, simply because the long-throw is still such an integral part of our tactics. He's adequate playing centrally alongside Whelan, but crap on either flank. We can be sure he'll start though. Likewise Ethers - who will certainly start against his old club, regardless of how crap he's been - and Whitehead - who has mystifyingly strolled back into the starting XI despite being worse than Olofinjana. I'm afraid that we're just going to have to put up with a season of those three plodders starting virtually every game this season, just like we're going to have to put up with Collins and Huth competing to see who looks more hopelessly out of position at full-back.

You're spot on about Ireland playing like us Mikey, except they didn't have a target man and the ball would come straight back at them almost instantly.

Bloody good goal. Well set up by Lawrence. It is great for us that we have two players with such good delivery from set pieces as well. They both looked good in the game, even though Ireland spent plenty of time watching Italy pass the ball around them.
I'd like to see them both start for us, and we certainly don't need that five at the back nonsense against West Ham.

I watched all the game and thought Lenny was man of the match by a mile. Even though as said above that Whelan Struggled at times just remember who he was playing against!
Lenny has got to start on Saturday, no question about that.

Although obviously biased , i thought the man of the match {and trying to be as unbiased and open minded as possible} was our Liam , just shading it from mcgeady who had a good game . Also thought Whelan ploayed well , and was better than Andrews . The ref was quite poor though .
