I've read shedloads of the threads and instead of commenting on them all I thought I'd tell everyone how I'm feeling and the context of why. We had a silent auction at work this week for charity, me and a few of my Canadian work colleagues chipped in for a box of scratch cards and a bottle of rum. Cost us $100 and we got $29 back off the cards plus the rum. I convinced the lads to put half the winnings on a Premier League accumulator, Tottenham, Liverpool and Stoke to win at home. Effectively 10-1 for all 3 to come in. I woke up this morning at 7.30am with a genuine belief that Stoke could win, David could slay Goliath and we would be dancing round the Macs store on Monday celebrating as we collected the winnings. For me it would never have been about the money, it would have been about 3 lads who have no real understanding of Stoke to have been celebrating with me as I stood in the centre of Calgary as proud as fuck. By 8.15am, 15 minutes into the game you wait for every year you realise that you are just an over optimistic prick who has just lost your mates money. It's not the losing that kills me, its the manner in which its done and with 15 mins gone, the result was a formality. We played with no skill, no ambition and no pride. The result of this was that our supporters waned in what is normally a superb effort, got outsung by the Shit for the second half and a certain song came up that embarrassed us all. I sang it myself at Old Trafford with best part of 10,000 others in that midweek cup match but today was different. I thought we were actually capable of taking them on the pitch in a 90 (maybe 95) minute game of football instead of taking pride in the fact that we used to knock shit out of opposing firms for fun. Guess that makes me a football romantic eh? I should start my own fucking appreciation society to make myself feel better

The thing that disappoints me about the manner of the defeat was seemingly how little fight we put up. We allowed Utd to dictate the play, we allowed them to have the ball and pass at will. We didn't press them at all and we didn't get in their faces. We didnt attempt to get behind their full backs, Lenny and Ethers were very restricted in their roles and most of the time Kits was on his own trying to compete with their cr halves.
When they scored I thought up til that point we looked comfortable in defence and we werent defending for our lives like against Chelski. But the difference was that Utd were much more patient in trying to find an opening whereas Chelski were constantly bombing forward and putting on tides of pressure.
The reaction after the goal was hard to take, it was like we had almost given up any hope of turning it around. Thats unlike us and it was easily our most disappointing home prem performance to date for me.
This was a totally different Stoke performance than the one last season vs Utd, Whether thats down to them being that much better or us being out of sorts I'm not sure. Lets hope we put it right next time.
As fans we can forgive losing but not when it looks like the team isnt giving 100%, which I thought was the case yesterday. The knock on effect of this is that it affects the atmosphere, it only takes a few strong tackles or a surging run and the crowd are up again. It didnt happen all game and we couldnt answer the shit fans when they were aksing where our famous atmosphere was.

I think to actually beleive that we somehow could / should win was simply over optomistic
We havent even scored a goal against Man U in 3 games
A draw would have been brilliant but to me the alternative to a 'stifling the life out of Man Utd' performance would have been a 3/4 nil defeat.

TP summed it up when he said that the players were flat from the start. I think I was most disappointed by the fact that we didn't really compete. When I looked at September's fixture list, I didn't expect a point, so to get the one at Bolton (even though it should have been three). Don't expect too much next week either .

We need a win and some confidence ASAP. United at home was never going to be an easy game but the fact we still haven't scored past them says a lot.

Calgary...i agree. My heart sank when i saw the formation 4-5-1. When will learn that you cant sit back against the best teams without them taking you apart...they may take you apart any way, but this is defeat without honour or enjoyment...on a technical note, Scholes sat deep and picked up the balls hoofed to Kitson who was being marked by three internationals, he then distributed the ball over the top of our 5 midfield players thereby taking them out of the game...very very easy...terrible day for Stokies to be taken out by the shit so easily.

The team looked disjointed. A case of trying to fit square pegs in to round holes.

It's mad changing a succesful defence and putting in defenders who are worse than the full backs we have already, Huth is clearly a good defender, but he's a shocking right back, he should purely be cover for Shawcross because i think that the lad is nackered at the moment and needs a good rest, was very guilty for the O'shea goal.
What really pained me were how simple both of the goals were, they weren't Stoke type goals against really.... Etherington is very poor and i fail to understand what he offers bar one run in the whole 90 minutes when he gets a corner for us. To me it seemed that Lawrence was putting the effort in of four midfielders, i accept Delap and Whitehead always sit anyway, but both of whom looked very flat.
Honestly believed this game should've been used to rest our best and most important players for a very tough period ahead.

Get real It wasn't the 2-0 that was embarrassing, it was the way we played, nobody is moaning that we lost, even the most optimistic amongst us knew we'd lose, but the total capitulation on our part was pretty shocking, it was like watching a practice game of defence V's attack, we gifted them the game. we shouldn't stew too long over this one, but there has to be an improvement, and TP needs have a think about what the hell he was doing picking an out of form winger to play up front ahead of an actual striker who has lots of ability .

You're embarrassed by losing to the team who has won the league THREE years in a row?
To beat Man Utd every player has to play well and you need a big slice of luck.
But unfortunately we played shit. Which happenes to every team from time to time. So just forget about it and stop being embarrassed FFS. Move on to the next game

If you're a Stokie born and bred living there, then sorry but Canada are now on my Z list ;D As to your comments, get fucking real, this was Manures full strength team,no Carling Cup reserves. They destroyed us,thats why they win lge every year and are there or thereabouts at the final of champs lge !! We have not made that plateau yet(much to the disappointment of some on here ??? ) Mid table would be fantastic again, this season and next, lets not run before we can walk etc....... My ten penny worth is this.
That was an away performance, much like most of our games last season.I feel totaly deflated watching the Potters for away games and i was totaly deflated for this one after 10-15 mins.My heart will always be with scfc but i still cannot fathom out why we cant even fucking control a ball or pass for more than 3 before losing it,and thats not just man u game.Even my gf keeps asking why we keep buying the same type of player and why are we so useless at keepin the ball,i have no answer for her. That nobhead Howard Webb made some stupid decisions but luckily not that important, but i couldnt even scream at the fat fucker as i was so down.No doubt i will get some stick here as i dont go to the games due to living 6,000 miles away but i realy admire you guys who spend big money to watch that uselss performance in all that wet weather, sorry i couldnt do it no more as i DO like to watch football and thats not footie.

Onwards & Upwards together folks Canadians BOOOOOO Stokie born and bred mate........Weston Coyney then Forsbrook. What upset me was with that performance was we could never have taken anything from it with the formation and ambition that we played with. 2-0 may look good on paper but we were absolutely destroyed and to answer someones comments earlier, I'd prefer to lose 4-0 with a set of bollocks intact than playing a damage limitation exercise. When Stoke (& fans) play their game they can intimidate the best of em. Both were shit yesterday As for Canadians in general, there's plenty of good ones, the best I've met are from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia but they think they're best part Brits anyway There are cocks in every society mate, looks like you fell upon a few in Cuba. No doubt they won the war for us ?........I've heard that story more times than I'd like to mention.
