One of he funniest things I have seen in my life was Nello at the testimonial at Villa Park , one of those occasions where tears of laughter just happened.

I lived next door to Neil for years. He took me to my first Stoke match when i was 9. We went to nearly every home game where we would get a lift into Stoke, wait outside the ground for one of the backroom staff to appear with our free tickets. Then after the game we would wait for the ground to empty and head down the players tunnel and stand by the players entrance just letting the players out and locking the door. I had tons of players autographs from the old Division 1. I couldnt believe my luck. We always managed a lift home of a very young inchy or Tony Allen who was the physio at the time. Neil allso took me to many circus as he was a part time clown and again we met all the stars of the shows. Niel told me that he used to be on Crewe Alex's books until he had to retire through a bad injury. I remember him showing me a letter he received from Kevin Keegan from when Keegan played in Germany complete with a photo of him and his familly. I was very sad when Brian Little got rid of him from being the kit manager, he was great for the squad at Stoke. I owe Neil big time for him educating me with Stoke and giving me the opportunities to meet all those stars.

I once wrote an article in the Oatcake about Neil which is on an unofficial Keele website, as part of a whole section about him. pawilton.net/keelealumni/KeeleLife/nello_the_clown.htmI can't believe it's 14 years since that appeared in the Oatie or that it's 45 years net month since I first met Neil Like you sonofbanks I was crying with laughter at his appearance at Villa Park in the Gordon Cowans testimonial. Saw him borrow Steino's shirt after the golden one came off and then start "warming up" (if you could call it that), thinking - no, surely Lou isn't going to send him on but he did - classic ! They, including the Villa players, tried to set him up to score a goal but Tony Kelly was the only player on the pitch not to twig what was going on and messed it up - Neil hasn't forgiven him to this day He wants me to write a book about him for the 50 years celebration next spring - not quite sure what to do ???

Perhaps a collection of anecdotes (I'm sure dozens of people have one) would make a nice book. Forword by Lou of course.
