Kranjcar's way too good for that team that's playing against Citeh now. He's the only player left from their Charity Shield team that started just over a year ago, and I'd be very surprised if he's still with Pompey at the end of this week. Whether he would come to Stoke is a different matter, but I wouldn't have thought that it's beyond the realms of possibility. Thats what I thought Paul, but the fee in question was said to be 9m - is that beyond the realms of possibility?Edit: After Nugents glaring miss, I certainly hope its not himI don't think it's really important how much Pompey are asking for at the moment. What is important is how much more they will be offered now than in January. It could still be quite a significant amount. While I was there, I'd make it impossible for them to durn down an offer for Belhadj too. Not only would it provide us with two players of a type that our first team is currently crying out for, it would also seriously damage Pompey further possibly giving us one less relegation spot to worry about. Indeed the signing of players of this type are of far more importance than chasing another striker in my book.

apparently Modric will only be out for 6-8 weeks, so it's not a season ending break, Arry might muddle through till he back rather than spend more cash ? it's not as if he hasn't got the squad to cope

Long shots Rangers have made an approach to sign Jack Wilshere, the Arsenal attacking midfield player. Ambitious isn't quite the word here is it? ;D

Graham Roberts , on Sky, has just said that his Spurs contacts have told him Redknapp's serious targes are Muntari and Martin Petrov. He didn't seem to think Kranch was figuring highly on his hitlist.
Go get him , Tone.
I wonder who else would be in for him in the Prem?

Serpico, 'Arry never muddles through ( rather he blackmails through, hound-dog expression an' all. And has Pompey's dire financial position to prove it. One of th commentators on TV yesterday, said that "Redknapp knew the right time to leave Pompey" with a straight face, as a complement to the fellow's shrewdness!

As happy as a sandboy Meaning
Very happy and content.
Origin
American readers will probably be more familiar with 'as happy as a clam', which originated in the USA in the 19th century. The Australian version is 'as happy as Larry', which (probably) originated there. Other creatures that are reputedly more than usually happy are larks, dogs with two tails and pigs in shit.
The word 'sandboy' brings to mind images of a child playing on the beach, making sand-castles and the like. In fact, sandboy was the name of those who delivered sand to public houses, theatres and homes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Children were used in that trade, but most sandboys were adults. This use of 'boy' has frequently been used for low-status male workers, as in tea-boy, barrow-boy, house-boy etc.
The use that the sand was put to was as a crude floor covering - a precursor to sawdust in what later became known as 'spit and sawdust' establishments - public spitting wasn't then reviled as it is now.

Krancjar would move us further away from the limited long ball team most of the media mistakenly mark us down as, but where would he play?
He has been used mainly on the left at Pompey, which would mean instead of Ethers, so we would lose the pace on that side (as Niko is not a runner) but gain more guile. He could play in the middle, but can anyone honestly see a Stoke team managed by Pulis not using two grafting tackling defensive midfielders in the middle of the park? I can't. Krancjar is simply not that type. Otherwise, he could be the front one of a middle three if we went 4-5-1 away from home (as could Tuncay), although Tone is also collecting strikers which makes only using one in a starting eleven seem unlikely.
Petrov would fit more into Tone's MO - fast and direct left winger to compete with Ethers for a spot.

Etherington ---Arismendi ----Lawrence
Canella-----Faye-----Shawcross--Young
Doesn't look like too shabby an option ;D

I'm not too sure I agree with you about Kranjcar's lack of graft there Jezza.
Slaven Bilic certainly isn't going to suffer a shirker easily and indeed he played Kranjcar in all twelve of Croatia's European qualifying games.
He's got a good engine on him and I would see him as being a far superior two footed version of Whelan able to play anywhere (but probably in the centre) across our midfield.

Beardy - 2 attacking fullbacks and a 5 man midfield chosen by Pulis with only one defensively minded player? It will never happen in our lifetimes. He's not Ossie Ardiles, you know! Paul, I was not implying Niko is a lazy player, but he is not, IMHO, an especially pacey one, more a cultured passer with a cracking shot. I'd love to see him in the middle of our midfield, but I can't get round Tone's predelection for strong arm central players, like Arismendi is rumoured to be.

I wouldn't neccessarily call Whelan a strong arm midfielder though Jezza, I don't think we would really lose anything in that regard if Kranjcar was to replace him.

Paul, and I am still not totally convinced Tone is taken with Whelan as a player, but that is another debate entirely!
So far this summer, to bolster the central midfield, he has bought Whitehead and, now it seems, Arismendi. Neither seem a candidate for "the new Glenn Hoddle"! ;D
Hope Tone proves me wrong and we get to see Tuncay, Krancjar, Liam and Ethers/Petrov in the same team.
