I know I know another Tuncay thread but hey when we sign a player of such awesome class as Tuncay lets milk it! As a real admirer of Tuncay for some time, all summer long I have been expecting him to be involved in a big money move and it didn't happen. Southgate said 2 weeks ago that he had not had any bids for him and the lad was thinking of going overseas but didnt want to. Now since we have signed him and for 5/6m!!! I dont think I have heard one comment from fans media pundits etc etc that haven't oozed superlatives for the guy. So any clues as why no fecker seems to have wanted him other than us and Brum?...lets face it he would walk into at least 75% of prem teams starting lineup.... I know who cares but it is more mysterious than a davesview post!

good post, was thinking exactly the same myself. Maybe it was down to his crazy wage demands. Or, maybe, just maybe, coates and pulis are much better at this transfer business, than anyone has given them credit for.
Lets face it, just over 48 hours ago, the mood of this board was close to abject depression. They've certainly proved the doubters wrong. In pulis we trust, has never been so true a statement. All i know is, I don't think i've ever looked forward to a football match so much in my life. I could barely sleep last night. Goarn Stoke!!!

I think Dave made a valid point that perhaps some clubs just don't have the money. Maybe at the end of this window we might even pick up another gem. Great minds Bronx Was actually thinking of Villa, Everton etc whn I posted. For team that finished where they did they seem to have tight funds available

The thing I wonder about is: our wage structure. Ancedoatally he was reckoned to be on 60 -65k/week at Boro - average premier league wage last season was - 23k/week (according to a survey)
My guess would be, we would be one of those clubs paying well below that average - so to avoid busting our wage struture, I can only assume we must have given Tuncay a rather massive signing on fee too ?
amazing signing though and I would agree - how did we pull this one off ? makes a real statement of intent.
Im still living the dream and - its absolutely marvellous

yeah i think its just waiting till all the big clubs have spunked their budget and then pouncing at the right time. Its gonna get to the point where there is zero transfer activity until the last week of the window.

I think most people forget that Liverpool and Manu are actually IN DEBT.
I realise that is only on paper, but they both have american owners who took out massive loans to secure the clubs. The recession has seen billions wiped off share values, so they're effectively in negative equity. It's one of the reasons they've both had to sell star players and why they've hardly bought anyone during this window.
Arsenal have a very good squad again and look dangerous, whilst Chelsea won't go bust and have bought for the future.
Spurs are the only team to truly splash the cash apart from ManC. It's a tight budget year (relatively speaking) for most teams I suspect.
We on the other hand, have just been given a massive transfer kitty by SKY and are way past the break even figure on ticket sales. As much as I've criticised Coates for his previous tenure, he knows how to keep and wisely invest his money, hence, we're not in debt and - for once - can speculate in order to (hopefully) accumulate.

Middlesbrough can't afford him, we made an offer a few weeks ago knowing that they'd have to accept it eventually because they can't afford to keep him.

I think Stoke's way around paying mega wages is offering survival bonuses that essentially account for that loss of income in their weekly salary.
E.g. Tuncay may be on 30k with £1.5m payable if we stay up.

True.
He'll be strolling into it.
The only reason i can think of is that it is a world cup year and that the big clubs wouldn't be able to give him first team football, and the smaller clubs around us wouldn't be able to pay 60k a week .
Most probable spot will be left mid, instead of Etherington - having gone by what i saw today, it won't take long before he becomes a folk hero.
