We'll be hoping to do this in many away games this season, but if one thing was clear from tonight, it's that in order to play this way you need the player(s) to do it, i.e. someone to pick the ball up in midfield and carry the ball quickly into the opposition half.
We are super-defensive away from home and that's TP's way, but to give us any chance of scoring we need that Aaron Lennon or Shaun Wright-Phillips style player, someone with pace who can take a player on and put the opposition on the back foot. Etherington just doesn't cut it in that role imo.
When we got the ball tonight we were so static - we gave Liverpool all the time in the world to get back - more than once we played backwards passes when Liverpool were short on numbers having been attacking in our area.
If we don't get a pacy player like that then we'll be more and more reliant on Delap's throw's to nick one away from home...
