Yes he definitely played for Stoke , but it was a long time ago even before my time so I should think he must have played about 1890 ;D.
Seriously I think he was a left winger pre Harry Oscroft probably early 50s.

He was an ever- present in the 48/49 season, so I guess he'd be in his 80s if he's still alive.
And he's #42 in Simon Lowe's book of 101 Stoke City Golden Greats, anyone know if Simon posts on here at the moment?

Hi, yes I do post occasionally, read daily. Alec was arguably our best ever left winger, although a feller called Joe Schofield in the 1890s also lays claim to that, arguably with Geoff Salmons. He and Frank Baker formed a devastating left wing partnership which first came together in the War and, as with many of that majestic Stoke team which finished 4th (highest ever finish) in 1946/47, he lost much of his career to Mr Hitler. Alec had a distinctive style as he crouched over the ball while dribbling leaving the fans with the impression he had a hump, which led to a few choice one-liners from opposing fans. Hate to think what he'd be subjected to today. He had a blistering left foot shot on him and was only eclipsed in the number of goals he made for Freddie Steele by some chap called Matthews on the other wing. I'd love Ethers to get himself up there in the left winger rankings as we haven't really had a proper attacking left-sided player for a long long time. Incidentally I didn't rank the players in order of 'greatness' in the book. It was strictly chronological by debut. That 46/47 team are only challenged by the early 70s side as the two best ever Stoke sides. They finished one place higher, but didn't win a trophy as the 7s team did. They were also broken up shortly afterwards because of age and having lost all that time to the war. Matthews being sold by egomaniac manager McGrory didn't help. Ormston and Baker were mainstays in the side and were unlucky that England had some incredible players to chose from including Tom Finney who when not playing on the right wing because of Stan would be picked on the left.

Alec Ormston was my grandad. He dies in the early 70's. I have some info and pictures of him but would love more. Unfortunately Stoke don't seem to archive many photo's from the 40's. I only remember him as grandad and not a great Stoke City player!

Didn't he run a pub in Meir? The Thorley? Think my Dad knew him vaguely. Unless it was his brother (George?) that had the pub My Dad definitely regarded him as a quality player.

I'm led to believe Alec Ormston was my Great, Great, Great Uncle...(Nan's, Dad's, Brother)
I never knew him or anything like that, it's before my time and a broken family.
However there was some debate as to whether Alec was adopted/Born out of wedlock as he took his mother's or aunt's maiden name, not the family name (which I won't disclose)
I'm not sure how accurate this is but I found it interesting

I'll do some asking around, My dad and aunty are Alec's son/daughter so they should know more. Wish my nannar was still with us as she would answer all my questions!! When she passed away all the football photo's and memorabilia was sent over to Canada to Alec's son and grandsons. I remember my nannars front room full of trophy's and photo's but unfortunately being one of 3 girls we didn't get any

Conroy was much more a right winger than a left winger as I recall. Oscroft was a cracking winger.

according to my grandad (his brother (ie my great uncle) and that side of the family, related to my uncle frank) ormston was playing on the opposite wing to my uncle in the 1940's. ormston and my uncle frank were supposedly one of the best wing partnerships in the country at the time and only two extremely talented wingers of the same period stopped them from getting into the england squad. so there you go
