20 years on. I remember getting home dead late and dead hammered and had seen it on the news when I put the telly on. Waking up at lunchtime I thought it had ben a dream. Or nightmare.

God is it 20 years? In a way it feels like it was from a different world but I'm seeing those pics in my mind like it was yesterday.
Never forget this when you're thinking about China, it's still a very brutal place imho.

Mmmm. It was sickening that none of the atheletes at the Olympics who had the ideal chance to raise awareness of human rights abuses didn't bother. They just towed the party line and droned on about how well organised it all was.

Probably the most powerful nation on earth imo.

Basically, 100s of Chinese pro-democracy protestors
How many depends on what you believe. There were several reports at the time that said the death toll was in the thousands. However the Chinese regime inisisted at the time it hadn't happened.
Murdoch took BBC World off his Chinese cable network when they referred to the massacre.

China as a country is too big, and the only way it can be controlled is by a brutal undemocratic insular dictatorship.

I wasn't defending them joe, more saying the country needs breaking up into smaller democratic states of managebale sizes think america would like that to ilford. how the deaths of 1000's allegedly can go unpunished is beyond me barbaric leaders they have want ousting , why cant people demonstrate without being gunned down and cast aside without any remorse, and when people go to pay respect to their lost loved ones they face something similar, or jail. saw the chinese police trying to stop camermen filming the other day, all they were filming was a couple of young woman who'd gone to some kind of burial place to pay their respects.

Lovely food though.
I mean, what are you going to do? Act as some sort of moral police for the entire human race?
Get real folks. There were probably loads of fellas walking in front of tanks in Chechnya or Jakarta or some other mis-spelled distant outpost. But because we can't watch a re-run on TV it loses significance. Live-Aid, Berlin Wall, Apollo Creed Landings, Iranian Embassy Club, etc etc.
What we need is a great big melting pot, big enough to take the world and all it's got.

They didn't make any difference to the quality/standard/morality of life in China.
They just provided the idiotic do-gooder Western righteous nuts with a few seconds of grainy tape footage for their propaganda exercises.
China! He do wong! Look at devil plinky plonky!
And casually forget about your own country and its repeated transgressions.

I further presume that you're not too bothered about human rights violations wherever they take place, and whomsoever they're carried out by. Do please correct me if my presumptions are wrong.

To give respect where it's due. I did go and have a mug of horlicks and reflected really on the same principles. As I'm not to blame for our Ancestors crime of slavery. I've said it before and I'll say it again. My gob opens before the mind clicks in. These youngsters have had brief glimpses of Democracy via Hong Kong and now the World media, so I suppose they know a lot more about democracy than I do. I don't much like our so called democracy, where someone can not say what he likes or dislikes without being labeled such as myself. nuf said today bosted. 8-)Bosted I still haven't had that sleep I was going to have at 8ish this morning, Granddaughter, she's just gone so definitely sleep now.

Communism is a nice theory but in practice it doesn't work. That's why China is such an economic non-entity in today's world... They're hardly a communist country anymore, they've privatized swathes of their economy, and are doing quite well from it, wouldn't you say ? Quite ironic that as the US turns to out right socialism (albeit a warped strain), China is rising and marching towards capitalism. And yes, i know, China's government can be repressive, but name one that isn't. Still, it beats Maoism . And you can't piss em off too much, or they won't lend us anymore money .

From your post above you seem to suggest that China is doing well economically due to it being a communist country, If i have read into this wrongly then that is my fault, either way, my post still stands, China has been marching towards capitalism for many years now, it is no longer a communist country, certainly not economically anyway, and the Chinese have never been better off than they are today (Although it's certainly not a perfect country). People may still cal it "communist China" or "red china" but, economically at the very least, it has changed dramatically over the last couple of decades .

China as a country is too big, and the only way it can be controlled is by a brutal undemocratic insular dictatorship. "controlled", why ? People want to be free, not controlled. If you try to control people, you will get a back-lash. Humanity doesn't live by rules. The people that make rules think that they are important. Most of us ignore them. We are just a bunch of glorified monkeys (without the glory). Please ignore this, I was pissed when I posted it. Anyway, ID, why the "control" thing ?

China is not a communist state? Over the last 20-30 years China's economy has gone through huge reforms, and it is now more market driven than it ever has been, the rise of China as a economic power is the result of them allowing private investment and entrepreneurship, thats a fact, they've come a long way because under the communist Mao those things were illegal .
