Last night at one of my local pubs, The Bouverie, in Chester I was fortunate to have a long chat to a former Stoke player - Ray Brown. Apparently, he played with Stanley Matthews and for Stoke from 1949 - 1957 when he got a career ending injury, against Sheffield Wednesday I think. He is a really nice bloke and it was fascinating chatting to him. I was just wondering if any of our older fans (I'm only 30!) remember him at all?

He had some incredible stories and said things like, " playing in front of a packed boothen end was an immense experience," it made me feel so proud!!

Not sure I like the term old Stoke fans.... Shall we say - older Stoke fans I started watching in the fifties but the name doesn't ring a bell. Do remember Doug brown who had fame in the Potteries at many levels - his daughter lives in BB This player couldn't have known Stan Mathews very long as Stan left circa 1948 and returned in 1963?

The Brown brothers were associated with SCFC for many years.

It must be Roy Brown. He was known as " The Brown Bomber ". He played Centre Forward and was a fans favourite. I think he may have been related to Doug Brown who was trainer for years, and later became Lord Mayor twice.

Another interesting fact that I am fairly sure I remember correctly was that the Brown family lived in Vickerage Road, Hartshill. I mentioned who he was transferred to in an earlier post on this thread. I hope I am right even though my brain is old.

Doug was a top bloke, used to live around the corner from him. Didn't he start Lads'n'Dads ? I'm sure he did....... How many on here used to play in a Lads'n'Dads team, I did , then went on to manage one. How many football league/premier players owe there livelyhood to him. Just think, nothing was in place for kids to play organised football before he set it up. People from all over the country saw and copied his template. A true insperation.

Roy was a great header of the ball. After his playing days were over he used to stand in the dugout and any injuries to players and he was on the pitch with his magic sponge within seconds.I assume he must have been some sort of physio.
I'm not sure where Roy lived but his brother Doug, founder of the Lads'n'Dads, lived in Hartshill.

I know he started the Matchmates Scheme, where the visiting teams would bring coach-loads of schoolkids to play in matches against our kids, then they would have refreshments together at somewhere like the Kings hall or up Keele then they all attended the match. I had some great days as first aider as some of the kids (well quite a lot of them) had never been to a footie match before. We also did an away match one bank holiday at Luton. it was at the time when they had a ban on away fans, but it didn't stop a few getting in and getting thrown out (they still got back in again). I had to go and ask them to move away as they were upsetting the kids day out It was a good job that I knew them and an even better job that they knew me ;D

Slightly off topic but this thread should draw the likely suspects in, who's our oldest poster (and/or the one who's followed Stoke for longest), if you're prepared to admit it??

I admit to folowing Stoke since the late sixty's but I will never grow old. I am still a scoolkid at heart, or as my kids put it: I am sometimes very childish Whats wrong with climbing trees and sliding down grassy slopes on a carrier bag? Apart from embarrasing my kids that is? I'm only 53 for gods sake.

It was Doug that had the bucket and magic sponge. In those days they called them the trainer. I have a feeling he was actually a chiropodist. Can no-one confirm my earlier thoughts that the family lived in Vicarage Road, Hartshill, and that when Roy left he went to Watford who play at ???????????

The last thing I want to do is hijack this thread for the GDB political debates, but if you want to characterise the anti-BNP arguments in one human being it would be Doug Brown and his contribution to this city.

Doug Brown lived in Yoxhall Avenue Hartshill/Penkhull..until he passed away about 6 years ago with Motor Neuron Disease...Doug was Stokes physiotherapist and started Lads'n'dads'..and was Lord Mayor twice...one of the first Black Lord Mayors in the country...
His son Martin played a few times for Stoke in the 1970's...
