I will probably get abuse for this, but......... A lot of kids read the Oatcake (my 10 yr old son included) and there is a lot of bad language on here - its just not needed. Done.

I agree, but mainly in thread titles, rather than in posts

Parental settings on the browser. That's what you need look at.
Anyway what's a 10 year old boy doing on the computer. Give him a football, throw him out of the back door and tell him not to come back in until it's dark.

No abuse necessary joules. It may be time you introduced your lad to these words, told him what they mean and that most people consider it impolite to use these words, but in certain situations they do get used. I did this, made little fuss about it, and me laddo now accepts that they exist and moved on. I even overheard one of his mates telling him he knew a rude word to which me lad replied in a bored way that he already knew and just carried on playing. Not bad for an eight year old. Next: the absence of God

I don't understand why swearing in thread titles is any worse than threads in posts- seriously, what has the location of the swear word got to do with anything? If your lad sees it in a title or sees it in a posts he's still seen it either way. It's very much an adult messageboard anyway... And I think that when you sign up for an account on any Proboards forum it tells you that you have to be at least 13 years old anyway; so technically he's breaking the terms and conditions.

It is not an adult message board - just like the internet it is open to absolutely everyone. It is difficult for every parent to help their child develop into a worthwhile adult and I appreciate the point Joules is making. I suspect much of the swearing on here is by teenagers who don't have the skills to express themselves more articulately. I always find humour to be far more effective as a put down - apart from when its Ronaldo we are referring to.

Well that's a fair enough comment and as I'm not a parent I don't feel qualified to even attempt to suggest how you bring up your kids... But if you're not happy with kids reading that sort of language... Well, don't let them read the board, just like I'd get told off if I was caught on the Oatcake before I was 14 or so. It seems a much easier solution than to try and stop 3,000 people from swearing.

I don't really think you'll ever stop bad language on a message board like this. The only thing we ask it that it's not used gratuitously in title threads* or in an abusive manner to other posters. Like it says in the rules thread, abusive messages will lead to your account being suspended for a while. *GD's thread is just about acceptable.

The abusiveness thing is fair enough; but I still don't understand the title thing? Why's one place okay and the other not?

This site is unfiltered and the users of it have gravitated to an accepted level of language with a some swearing, usually for comic effect and from time to time some trully obscene language creeps in, but on rare occasions.
I like it this way and it does not sit well with me that someone would want to impose a standard that I think would detract from the meaning and humour that swearing gives this site.
Instead, as a parent you should be monitoring your child's use of the web and guiding them, even blocking sites that are not suitable. As an example, would you contact a porn site and ask them to remove the pictures because your children are browsing their site? Of course you wouldn't. You'd set the parental controls on the browser and have a word with the kids about it. Same here, you don't impose controls on the internet you impose controls on the kids. There are other boards you can visit where language filters are used, I would ask that you frequent those boards and leave this one alone.

Do you ask 20,000 fans on a matchday to stop singing "dick" in Delilah?

Well what's interesting is that in my time on the oatcake I've seen at least three requests for less cursing. So obviously the previous two did nothing.
To this point the mods have allowed cursing so that is part and parcel of the forum. I can't say I'm always pleased with some of the language here but it is what it is and while i appreciate that you are trying to prevent your son from learning/using such words those words do exist and people do use them.
And here on the Oatcake the mods seem to have deemed them acceptable (though I don't speak for the mods by any stretch).

Interestedobserver... That may be the case, but in MY time on the Oatie I've seen at least 337 appeals for MORE swearing. ;D

That must be what's driving it then.
In that case, the OP should appeal for fewer appeals for more swearing.
