They have a station guard 'checking' tickets at Wolves these days. I went to an agency there a few weeks back and when I came walking towards the gate I put my hand in my pocket and felt a card, thinking it was the ticket I showed the bloke as I went through. I realised afterwards that it was a business card for one of the girls working at Hays Recruitement ;D I don't think you'll need to buy tickets!

If you're going from Stafford don't bother with a ticket because they never check. And even if you do get clocked, just say that the train arrived straight away and you didn't have time to buy a ticket. They have a machine with them for printing out tickets so they just charge you the standard fare on the spot. If you're going from Stoke probably best buying a ticket because I think the police check you have a ticket before you board.
Also how old is the 'child' you're thinking of buying a ticket for. I don't know for sure, but I've got a feeling the cut off point for child tickets is quite young, something like 14 so you might get caught out.
