congratulations glenn Irish Call Up For Whelan Posted on: Tue 05 Feb 2008 City's latest signing Glenn Whelan has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for tomorrow night's friendly with Brazil. Whelan, who turned 24 in January, is called up to the senior squad for the first time having previously appeared for their "B" team in a 0-0 draw with Scotland in November. The midfielder flies over to Dublin tonight and could be in line to receive his first ever cap and play against the likes of Real Madrid's Robinho & Julio Baptista, Arsenal's Gilberto Silva and Chelsea's Alex in tomorrow's Croke Park fixture. Glenn made his City debut in Saturday's 2-1 win over Cardiff City, coming on as a substitute in the second half for the Potters. Action from Dublin kicks off at 7.45pm but City supporters can tune into the pre-match build up on Sky Sports 1 from 7.00pm. Meanwhile, Ryan Shawcross and Adam Rooney could go head-to-head tonight in the England Under 21s vs Irish Under 21s game at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium. The match is also shown live on Sky Sports 1, with coverage beginning at 7.30pm.

hes been called up as a replacement for steven reid
this from the FAI website
Steven Reid has failed to recover from the knee complaint which prevented him from taking any part in training since he assembled with the squad on Sunday.
The midfielder has returned to Blackburn Rovers to receive treatment and Glenn Whelan, signed on deadline day last week by Stoke City from Sheffield Wednesday, has gained his first call-up to the senior squad as a replacement.
Whelan was previously captain of the Ireland Under-21 squad until 2006 and won his first cap at 'B' level against Scotland last November

The trend continues - sign for Stoke and get an international call-up.
