Isn't this a one off role for the friendly -I thought Cappello had said that he wouldn't announce the captain until ahead of the qualifiers?

Gerrard is the consumate professional...the choice seemed to be between him and Ferdinand!!!!...Rio is hardly a role model and ambassador is he??...unless its missing drugs texts and the art of roasting.

Consumnate professional he is, he does two jobs every time he plays, running the midfield and refereeing the game.

I never said he wasn't. His whingeing excuses for failure, tendency to referee games and general "Stevie Me" attitude are less than appealing though. Plus, for someone so "inspirational", he hasn't inspired Liverpool or England much lately.
Still, depressingly, probably the best man for the job when you look at the rest of the team. Only Hargreaves comes across as remotely likable.

Call me old-fashioned, but I always thought the England Captain should be someone you could respect.

Gerrard should have been made captain before terry Most fans think he was the best england player last season www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,2483_3110667,00.html i agree

Surely the England capatain should be based on performances on the pitch for England. Out of all the 'untouchables' only Ferdinand comes close to his club form with England. Plus he has performed well at major championships.
Gerrard has 61 caps for England. You can count on one hand the number of good games he has had. His best game came against the mighty Andorra who are conference standard at best. An outstanding memory of Gerrard in an England shirt is playing a suicidal back pass in the France game in Euro2004 which lead to the penalty and defeat in a match we never looked like losing. Imagine if Beckham had done that? Gerrard is a good player but nothing more. He is pushed forward as Englands saviour by the scouse loving media.
We need Paul Scholes back in the England midfield but I doubt it would happen.
Personally I would love to see Ledley King get fit and capatain the England side. He is a tremendous footballer and is far superior to Terry. In fact I would have Woodgate in front of Terry. Unfortunately for the lads involved and England they suffer from terrible injuries.

Gerrard should of been captain before Terry was, under the McClaren empire.
Stevie G is arguably our best player. He's not even had a bad season this year either, he is still smashing in the goals and helping Pool' as much as he can, he just doesn't make the headlines as much. Good appointment.

Just doesn't perform for England though, for whatever reason.

The whole England set up needs an injection of selfbelief after McClown's era. Sure with the right guy in charge we'll start to see some great perfomances from Gerrard. Good choice in my opinion

So far I think Capello is moving in the right direction with his attitude to team spirit but I'm not sure about Gerrard he has done nothing for England. John Terry stands out as a natural captain when fit in my view.

Gerrard and Lampard have been equally wank for England. How the fucking hell Kevin Nolan isn't in the squad let alone team god only knows?
Well actually I do know, he plays for Bolton.

These matches are for Capello to pick the right man for the job. This time Gerrard has the chance so why not support him?
Next match it may be Terry, or Ferdinand or even bloody defoe
Let Capello tinker so he gets the right formula
People tend to forget we have been watching English football for years so we base our opinions around past tournaments and qualifying groups
Capello can only really base on the last month and previous games he has seen
He has 7 months to choose correctly, Let him choose

What's wrong with Barry as captain? Only player to really put in decent performances when he played in the Qualifiers. I suppose he might not be a big enough name to sate the prima donas, but I wouldn't mind him.
Ferdinand is crap and accident prone. King and Terry would do me at the back.

Ferdinand is crap and accident prone. Yes of course he is mate. Coming from a bloke who thinks Sidibe is a good player we can safely say you don't know what you are on about.
