Been mentioned a few times on here as an ambitious loan target for us? We'd be nearer to his home - and he is mates with 'Arry? tinyurl.com/2ktn7q East Anglian Daily Times Town eye England striker 05 February 2008 | 07:01 Your view Got a story? DEREK DAVIS
THE Benjani Mwaruwari switch from Portsmouth to Manchester City has been closely monitored by Jim Magilton as he plots his own next move in the loan market.
The Blues boss is considering making a loan move for Pompey striker David Nugent, who is surplus to requirements at Fratton Park.
Although the 'emergency' loan window opens for business on Thursday, Magilton would probably not take Nugent until February 22. That would mean the one-time England international would be available to the Blues through the play offs if needed.
Magilton was keen to see if Benjani did complete the move from Portsmouth and if it might affect his chances of landing Nugent.
But it is understood Harry Redknapp would be willing to allow the former Preston striker to go out on loan once he has recovered sufficiently from a hernia operation.
Pompey now have Jermain Defoe, Niko Kranjcar and Milan Baros, in attack with Muntari and Kanu, returning from the African Cup of Nations, although the former Arsenal striker Kanu is a long-term injury doubt.
Defoe's move from Portsmouth to Tottenham is a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer and the size of the fee received for Benjani could have a knock-on effect on what Portsmouth are prepared to offer Spurs in order to make the Defoe deal permanent.
Manchester City and Portsmouth look set to agree a new deal that would take Benjani Mwaruwari to Eastlands.
The Zimbabwe striker had been left in limbo after City tried to back out of signing him for £7.6million - with Portsmouth claiming the move had already been signed.
The Premier League were called in to adjudicate and it is understood they confirmed the paperwork for the move had been submitted before the transfer deadline on Thursday night.
With the Premier League keen for the clubs to agree a compromise it now looks as though Benjani, the third leading scorer in the top flight so far this season, will move to City but possibly for a lower fee or on a loan deal.
Nugent has been a constant thorn in Town's side over the years scoring seven goals in six games against the Blues, including the goal for Pompey last month that knocked Ipswich out of the FA Cup.
Town have also been keeping tabs on Sheffield United's Danny Webber and Leon Best at Coventry City.

Magilton's no mug either. He's looking in the right aisles at Tesco's methinks here.
Wonder why he doesn't mention Goofy @ Derby (ooops, silly me, played for Norwich ;D )
Get in first TP. Old pals act with Harry will do nicely.

I suppose it comes down to the same question though...
Would Pulis play a Nugent-Fuller partnership and actually leave Mama on the bench.
He's not fast, but Nugent is much more of a Fuller than a Sidibe, isn't he? He certainbly couldn't function in the Noel-Williams/Sidibe role that Pulis loves.
Not having a big lump up front would mean a massive change of tactics?

And playing it through the midfield? Oops, a little bit of jizz came out then. ;D

Decent player at this level but clearly not upto Prem standards. He is a good finisher when he gets in on goal, but I don't think he's anything special, and if we're going to bring in a striker, we need someone a bit better.
Can't believe I just said that, but I guess that's how high my expectations have risen too!

The Prem seems a bridge too far for DN, so a drop will do him good & he will be very effective again in the CCC - no question of that.
It is the same problem though. Mention a name of almost any given striker and its:
- can he do Ric's job? & even if so, would he be prepared to sit on the bench - as we'd be talking Drogba-esque to come in ahead of him [there's a thought with Anelka arriv...sorry, ;D ]
- can he do Mama's role (but score)? And again, would he be prepared to sit & wait his chance (don't forget, one goal & Mama cements his place for next season as well now i reckon)?
Mmm..."Mama's role (but score)?"
Sorry, but Drogba it is then - covers both bases & will be well hacked off when Nic's Bentley is in his parking spot when he's back at training next week.
Offer to cover 10% of his win bonuses PC & we'll be there ;D ;D ;D

I really don't think Mama is a nailed-on first-teamer. I think he played against Cardiff as Pulis wanted to disrupt the team as little as possible with the influx of new players, rather than as Fuller's partner.
If I were Tony I would leave Mama on the bench for home games, and start him away. I can actually see him doing this because Tone is a believer in a 'home' line-up and a different 'away' line-up.
EDIT: Nugent would be the final piece of the jigsaw IMO. A top, top striker in our division and potentially one for the division above. Absolutely the sort of striker we should be going for, and a realistic one at that!

"Tony's" ( ) caption made me chuckle on your avatar but i don't think he sees it that way.
And whether he's in a minority of one doesn't matter really either - he loves his Mama & i think he is nailed on.
That said, interesting idea on the "home & away" formations (or "depending who we're playing" formations) otherwise, as identified elsewhere, he can get all the flair players he likes but if they don't fit the system & he is loathe to change it, they aren't going to get a kick.

To be fair Armitage, we are getting the good bits of recent Preston teams. ;D
All the considerations above taken into account, i would be very tempted if we could get a sniff at Nugent. Not the fastest but has skill and will score at this level. I really can't see that his foray into the Prem will have made him less of a natural & very effective CCC goalscorer?

Nugent could make sensational return Preston North End have declared an interest in bringing golden boy David Nugent back to Preston
By Brian Ellis
Preston North End manager Alan Irvine and chairman Derek Shaw have both gone public about a possible loan move for the £6million striker.
The chances of landing Nugent to help beat the drop have got to be slim, particularly on the wage front.
Fellow Championship side Ipswich are also reported to be keen on recruiting the ex-England international, but North End could try the old pals act and ask Portsmouth about borrowing their former star until the end of the season.
"If it became apparent that he was going to be available then we would have to find out a little bit more about it," Irvine told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"Obviously, David may not be available, or he might not want to go out on loan.
"He may prefer to stay and fight for his place at Portsmouth.
"Or maybe he has his own preferences where he would like to go on loan.
"But it would be an interesting one."
Shaw also refused to rule out an approach to Pompey if Nugent becomes available in the emergency loan market once he has recovered fully from a hernia operation.
Harry Redkapp's side travel to Deepdale a week on Sunday for their televised FA Cup fifth round tie.
And Shaw suggested on a local radio discussion programme last night that he might just pop the question to his opposite number over a sherry in the boardroom.
"I would be very, very surprised if we could live with the wages he is earning now," he said.
"It has been reported today that Ipswich are showing an interest in him.
"David is actually injured at the moment.
"But if he was to go to Ipswich, they have just had £35m worth of debt wiped off by an investor.
"I'm sure it would be linked with a hefty loan fee and maybe other add-ons if they were promoted.
But if we could get David back to help us out of a hole, I'm sure we would be very keen on doing it."
Nugent scored 37 times in 95 starts for North End during a two-and-a-half year stay.
He became the hottest property outside the Premier League, even made the full England side and was a huge favourite with the Deepdale crowd.
But since switching to Fratton Park last summer he has struggled to force his way into the Pompey team on a regular basis – his only three goals coming against lower league sides in cup competitions.
The 22-year-old flew to Munich at the start of last week to be operated on by the same world renowned hernia surgeon who treated Paul McKenna and Michael Owen.
He has already started light training and hopes to be back in the swing of things next week.
And Nugent announced last night that he was setting his sights on a comeback in the FA Cup tie at Deepdale.
He said: "The operation went well.
"I came back last Wednesday night and had a few days off before starting my rehab on Monday.
"The injury had been niggling me for a while, but it got worse and after a while the pain was too much.
"So I had to do something about it.
"It's frustrating, but that's part of football – you get injuries.
"I want to be back in training with the lads soon and hopefully I'll be travelling up with them when we play Preston.
"I haven't had the best of times here so far, but I'm sure that one of these days the luck will go my way and I can start scoring a few goals."
Any move by Preston for Nugent would be greeted with delight by fans, many of whom feel the club would not be struggling in the Championship drop zone had he still been at the club.
The Liverpudlian would love to prove his critics wrong by hitting a rich vein of form in the Premier League.
But with competition from recent signings Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros, together with established fr ontmen John Utaka and Kanu, Nugent could find himself struggling to get a game.
Redknapp may decide a loan would be his best chance of regular first-team football in the hope he rediscovers his goal touch.
And Preston admit they would be in any Championship queue touting for his services, hoping his love affair with Deepdale could swing it their way.
Meanwhile, tickets for the FA Cup tie with Pompey go on general sale tomorrow.
Fans are reminded that the cup tie kicks off at 4pm on Sunday, February 17, and will be shown live on Sky TV.

Pah !
We beat 'em to Gally's moniker, so no problem with Nugent's either ;D.
As with every player, loan or otherwise, they all will want to join a club on promo chase not in a relegation scrap surely.
Our very own Tone (Scholes) can pull the Preston old boys act with him too - i think they overlapped @ Deepdale?
