strange one this as i think (as some have mentioned) it does depend largelyon your age as to whether or not you conside Ric to be a "Great". Personally i think he's a great player but not yet worthy of being a Stoke great. I have to disagree with Okeydokey in that although he is a very talented player, Ric quite simply IS lazy far too often, especially if things aren't going his way. It's especially hard to choose who is or isn't great now as we also have the overlapping of leagues to contend with. We could judge, Stein, Hoekstra, Sheron, Thorne, Cranson etc. easily as they were all players who were with us outside of the top flight but we now have players who were great for us in the Champ but have not cut it in the Prem. So, with that in mind, would we describe Cresswell as useless as he hasn't cut it this year or If we had stayed in the Champ and he'd got another 12 goals from the centre of the park would he go down as a great as he was brilliant for us in the lower leagues? What i'm basically saying (in a very confused as well as confusing way) is that how many of the greats we've had in the last 23 years lower down the leagues would be considered as greats if we'd been in the top flight? For all we know Sheron, Thorne et al may have floundered in the Prem!

been watching Stoke for 40 years and I would put Ric in the 'great' category

I just don't get this 'Fuller Is God' stuff. He has one good game in 5, and for the remaining 4 looks either disinterested or well beaten (by his man) as he was against West Ham. He's what I'd call a 'decent' player - when he feels like it.
He's got a place as an impact sub but if we're hoping to establish ourselves in the Prem we need to improve on him (and others)

I suppose the thing is this. We've had some very technically talented players, players who would lie bleeding for the club, players who become cult heroes. Obviously the are very few players who can even come close to touching someone like Matthews in terms of ability, professionalism and so on. There are a number of players from the past being gradually forgotten as time passes, maybe soon people won't recognise names like Clamp, Steele and Bentley.
I suppose for me the greats are the heroes of each generation, of each team. A player like Sergei could never really be compared to Denis Smith or even Abdy, but he was the lynch-pin of that team and really stood out. Lawrence and Fuller may not be as good as Matthews or Greenhoff, but they were the pinnacle of the side that saw us promoted last year. I think that's what classifies a great.

Maybe Glenn can be as good a CM as Alan Hudson.
Not a chance sorry mate Glenn will never be anywhere near the player Huddy was Huddy IMO was the best player to ever wear the great Red and White

Fuller puts a shift in when he feels like it, which isn't too often. If you want to continue to wear your Fuller-tinted specs, and concentrate on the odd game he 'turns it on', fine, I prefer to balance that out with the games where he's done virtually nothing. I don't dislike the fella, just think we need to do better. After the West Ham thing many on here thought we should let him go, so I'm not on my own in thinking he's not indispensable.

Without Ric we would be below west brom Hes our top scorer and main threat - so i wouldnt say it was only the odd game he turns it on Just take a look at the running he does up front and holding the ball, without that it just comes straight back at us - look at villa away first half then second half Same with newcastle away There isnt another player in our team who could have come up with that goal against villa at home Just ask any west brom fan if hes worth us trying to get someone better, they shit theirselves when they hear his name
