You have 4 "downs" to move the ball ten yards forward. If after using 3 of those downs a team still hasn't achieved the ten yards, on the fourth down they tend to take the option to "punt" which to put it simply, is to boot the ball down field to the opposing team, they catch the ball and "return" it as far up the field as possible before being tackled. Possession then switches to the opposing team. They have four "downs" to move the ball ten yards. Everytime they manage to move the ball the ten yards, the "downs" return back to the "first down" Still with me? Each team is made up of 3 smaller units, "Offence", "Defence" & "Special Teams" "Offence" do the attacking play when they are on the field. "Defence" likewise do the defending when on the field. "Special Teams" do the kicking (Punts/Field Goals) and kick returns when on the field.
There's alot more!

When attacking there is i think normally three forms of move. The Quarterback can take the option to throw the ball, to either the WideReceivers or the TightEnd. He can chose to lay the ball off to one of the RunningBacks whose job it is to then leg it like fuck down the field. Or he can chose to run(scramble) with the ball himself - usually a dangerous option as the Defensive line/Linebackers will be looking to nail him(Sack him) possibly leeding to injury to the prize asset. Being "sacked" will normally leed to negative yardage leaving a position of 2nd & 16 (2nd down, 16 yards required)
There's more!!!

- Have some kind of lined up face-off.
- Run around for approx 3 seconds.
- A word from the sponsors for approx 3 minutes.
- Repeat for approx 7 hours.
Add to this some high-fives, excited commentators, motorola head sets and cheerleaders. I think the winner is the one with the most points, or something like that.

Pre game show is excellent if you are into the NFL .I know the NFL IS not the Brits cup of tea I was like minded until i came over here to live , took me a couple of years to get into it but love the game now , better then Rugby in my opinion apart from all the ads . Being an adopted New Englander i am a big Pats fan but i am watching the game from my new location of warmer weather and no my more shovelling the white stuff .
