I've always thought what it would be like to have the "brain" of a gloryhunter. Well today, I've had my real first hand experience of not one, not two but THREE (sorry FOUR) of the feckers at work today.
I've recently moved offices and work with a different set of people, lovely little mixture of A Baggies (bless), A Wolves fan, An Arsenal 'fan', a Chelsea 'fan' and of course a ManUre 'fan'.
Friday before the Stoke-Albion match, some cracking banter between me and Mr Baggie, and the Wolves fan stuck up for me. For a short while anyway. Monday morning, brilliant (for me anyway).
Fast forward 2 weeks, Arsenal-Chelsea this weekend. Banter? Not one bit of it. It's as though the fixture doesn't exist. By lunchtime, I thought I'd bring the subject up. Following is the most annoying footy chat I've heard/seen for a long long time...
Arse Fan (AF) - What times kick-off Sunday? Chelsea Fan (CF) - I think it's 4.00 Me (SF) - It's tomorrow at 5.15, don't suppose you're going are you? AF - No, I went to Villa Park, no tickets left Me - It's a Wembley you soft twat. CF - Yeah, it's at Wembley! Don't you know anything? Me - You didn't even know what day it was on!!!! CF - Did he say Sunday? I meant Saturday. Me - Yeah yeah. Been many games have you? CF - Yeah, went to your place. We played very well. Me - Yeah, best team to visit in my opinion. CF - Close though, only 1-0. Me - No, it was 2-0. Sure you went? CF - Yeah, early in the season. Sure it was 2-0? Me - Yes, I'm sure. AF - Still playing rough are you? Me - Lots of unrepeatable words, mostly ending in off. How's Van Persie doing? Still bundling keepers into the net? AF - Vacant look on his face. Me - Don't remember? Just because you were losing. AF - No we weren't. We were drawing at the time.
At this point I walked out the room, shaking my head in disbelief.
Closely followed by Mr Arsenal shouting "At least we got revenge a few weeks back!"
I told him to check the fixtures, and have a look for the last home game for Arsenal.
10 minutes later, I return.
Mr ManUre - Pair of idiots, they haven't the foggiest. Me - You're right there. Mind you, what do you remember about the Stoke matches?
To be fair, he got everything spot on, and actually goes to most of the games. Brought up just outside Manchester, genuine supporter. He ALMOST got my respect.........until
"I'm surprised they let us play our Semi against Everton at Wembley, not really fair as they'll be mostly United there".
Opportunity too good too miss for me! "Is that because most of your fans come from a 30 mile radius of Wembley?" MU - No, because 2 matches in one day is a lot really, isn't it?" Me - Aren't you playing Sunday? MU - No, def tomorrow. CF - No, it's def Sunday. It's here in front of me. Me - Anyway Mr CF and Mr AF - why do you support your 2? CF - My Dad supported them as a kid blah blah blah AF - I used to live in London, thought I'd follow them Me - Well, where you from? AF - Wolverhampton Me - Well why don't you support them then? AF - I might next year if they go up.
At this point, the term "bunch of gloryhunting fuckers" left my mouth with such volume it went very quiet for about 15 minutes. Eventually the Wolves fan who'd kept very quiet throughout pipes up "I agree with everything you've just said about them 2.
Me - Looking forward to next season then? Looks like you're there or thereabouts now mate WF - Yes, should be good. Me - You don't seem too excited? I remember last year I struggled to sleep the night before our final game WF - Oh, I'm not going. I've got tickets for the Stoke match. I've been splitting my matches between Stoke and Villa this year.....
I FUCKING GIVE IN!
Sorry if it's so long winded, but that's more or less word for word the conversation I had today.
Unbelievable...

I used to work in Telford with a most of the '4000 that went in division 4' Wolves fans, the odd Baggie, season ticket holder for Derby (never mind!) and ooodles of plastic ManUre fans. I used to get fed up with the Monday comment of 'see you won/drew/lost at the weekend - did you go', which I got fed up with trying to explain that as a season ticket holder I go to every home game, in fact I organise my life around the fixtures once they come out! Those that grace their clubs with their presence on a 'regular' basis weren't too bad, especially when our respective clubs played each other, but the plastic fans really get your back up. so I sympathise, Staffordstokie, but I'd like to have felt the 15 minute silence! Bet you'd have struggled to walk through that!

I hate them Dec. If you listed to those Wolves fans 9,000 of them went every week to a 4,000 crowd

I've got a mate who is a Man Ure ST holder and I can tolerate him, he goes to the games and is very knowledgeable about football in general. We have a lot of in depth chats about Stoke and Utd and he has been generally more positive about our prospects this season than I have, and it's been a joy to talk to him with us both being in the same league.
On the other hand a guy I used to work with really got under my skin; he would talk about Utd every morning when we got in. I would be amazed if he has ever been to Old Trafford in his life, it used to make my skin crawl. I didn't particularly like him anyway, but some of the stuff he used to come out with literally would make me want to launch myself over the desk and smack him. Now I'm not a violent person but that is how much he wound me up. I thought the best way to deal with him was not dignify his bullshit with a response and just sit there and seethe and shake my head every so often.
That is the two sides of the coin, the bloke at my office gives all Utd supporters a bad name! But as my mate proves you can't tar them all with the same brush.

Yep, you're right there. I know a 100% genuine Arsenal fan, has been a Season Ticket holder for God knows how long. Born in Islington. Very honest in his appraisals, and also agreed that Stoke were the better team against them last year! Dr Oetcake..........I DON'T GET IT!!! It's been a long day

The stupid thing about the Arsenal fan is that he did actually go to the Stoke game at The Bear Pit.
It must be terrible to see every game you play blur into one, simply because you don't actually go.
We've still got those WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE clappy things in the car that they dished out against Villa, and it's got the fixtures on it. My 9 year old Nephew can reel off the scores and Stoke scorers of EVERY game this season.
The look on his face every time Stoke score is priceless. It's a ritual. He sits between me and my brother, Stoke score, he jumps on his seat, goes mental, gets lifted 3 foot in the air while me and his Dad are going barmy, and screams his head off.
And that's what a Glory Hunter will never understand or experience.
I nearly said I feel sorry for them, but after today....
Fuck em

TBH I don't even think they bother with that. I think they have minimal contact with THEIR team, because they don't need to. It's rammed down theirs and everyone else throats 24/7, and this is their idea of 'supporting' their team.
Can't be 100% sure but I think the Arsenal fan didn't even watch their match until the 2nd half, BY CHOICE.

The bloke I worked with was definitely a final score fan (like that phrase btw). He used to just regurgitate everything he read in the fucking Sun that morning. It’s a little more sadistic than not knowing anything; it’s like pretending you’re a proper supporter for the appearance of it and to save face.

I've got a mate who is a manure season ticket holder and has been for nay on 20 years plus now. Born and raised on the outskirts of Manchester and sacrifices alot to go and watch them all over Europe. I have a lot of respect for him as he is a true football fan and the banter is cracking. Then here in Liverpool I have a mate who is an Arsenal 'fan' from Bolton and the furthest south he has been is Leicester, " they play good football though" when I asked him what was wrong with supporting Bolton " they're shit aren't they whats the point" he does not understand when I cant make a game and I'm going loopy listening to Stoke on the net hanging on Nige's every word. Can not stand glory hunters, a very sad sad breed of individual.

dom90...I have never lived in Stoke On Trent, but all my family are and, in most cases still live in the area. I was brought up on SCFC and have supported them all my life( am 42) despite not actually having lived in the area. I did make a bee line for Staffordshire University when I had the chance so that I could go and support the team (all throughout the Ball era and subsequent Macari first era). Should I support Stoke City???

I know you're not having a go and I do know what you mean especially with gloryhunters. Their only aim is to latch onto a successful club regardless of their location/connection to that club. I know of people who support Chelsea for part of the season then next time you see them they've become a Shit fan - Sad. I was born in Mansfield due to my dad having a teaching post there at the time. His teaching eventually took us to the Blackpool area where I still live. It's not where you live as much as the association you have with the area your family are from. Every time I venture to Stoke I get a feeling of belonging. I have always felt this from a very young age and I know it will never go away. The immense pride I feel at what Stoke have achieved over the last two years or so is intense. This is not a feeling your gloryhunter will ever know!!!

Oatcakes are definately one thing I can vividly remember in my childhood. They were always on the breakfast table at my grans house and were mentioned nearly as much as Stoke!!! I managed to give up the oatcakes but not Stoke. Just as well really!

I've supported Stoke as long as I can remember and have been Crewe born and raised, never once lived in Stoke. I go to as many games as work etc. allows and would class myself as a true fan. My friend has supported United all his life, again living in Crewe. He knows his football and although never gets to go to many of the matches is definitely not what I'd call a glory hunter. I feel sorry for a lot of United fans who get shit just for supporting a successful club, especially those who have supported them throughout the 80's and other times that they've been a bit shit. What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter where you come from or how many times you see your team, or what team you support It's how much you love that team, and how much fire you have in your heart for them that matters.

I don't think geography is relevent, its how you support your team and by support I mean that you go to every game that you possibly can, you stick by your team no matter what, when you wake up in the morning its not long before you are thinking about the club, the next game, you avidly search newspapers, TV & the internet for any mention or snippet concerning them.
Most of all you know that they are your club, and you love them as much as you do your nearest and dearest, you hurt when things go wrong but that pales into insignificance when things go right, and when they do go right there's no better feeling.
gloryhunting shites who attach themselves to clubs because they are the team who wins most at the moment will never ever have what the true fans have, our sense of allegiance, brotherhood and above all pride in something that we can all say truly belongs to us.
I sometimes feel that gloryhunters should be pittied for never having that feeling, but then I come to my senses and know deep down that they don't deserve it

I asked him about the Champs' League game last week and he said "second half was boring, I turned over to the Liverpool Chelsea game."
