You could of course change your keyboard settings on your computer to US-English - International. Then all you have to type is ä "a consequentiality and it will put the umlaut on top of the a like this ä. However a few keys are swapped around, and it takes a little to get used to.
For a laptop for the numberpad method do this.
hold down the Fn key and press F11 (or whatever F key has a little image of a numberpad on it). That should nurn on a little light on the keyboard. Then hold down Alt key and type the following numbers on the numberpad
0196 for Ä 0228 for ä
The number pad on a laptop is as follows.
0 M 1 J 2 K 3 L 4 U 5 I 6 O 7 7 8 8 9 9
Don't forget to turn off the numberlock after, as you won't be able to type correctly. (Fn+F11).
Let us know if that works.

shit, it wont let me put it in an email address did you change your keyboad settings? If it is now a US keyboard, the @ symbol is above the number 2 (SHIFT+2)Sorry, misread your post. I doubt anyone has ä in an email address, it doesn't conform to standards. Just put an a.
