Setanta looks to raise up to £100m The Financial Times reports that Setanta is holding talks with private equity firms to raise up to £100m after it failed to retain both of its packages for the 2010/11-2012/13 Premier League rights.
Potential subscriber losses may cast doubts over its future Setanta will now pay £159m for its package, a significant reduction on its existing contract. While Setanta needed to cut costs to reach breakeven, we believe potential subscriber losses could cast doubts over its future and deter investors.
Business model under review Setanta is reported (Daily Telegraph) to be reviewing its business model and considering narrowing its offering from the 12 channels it currently offers to 2-3 core channels. While this is likely to secure payments to and coverage of the Premier League and the FA Cup, reports suggest that Setanta is considering pulling out of / renegotiating other contracts. This could have consequences for Premier Rugby, the US PGA Tour and the Scottish Premier League.

Their coverage is very poor anyway, so probably no great loss.

setanta are a rubbish outfit... was watching t.v on saturday, all premiership results were 25 minutes late.
i was going to phone them with results that were appearing on sky.
i would not miss setanta if they folded.
very cheap and very nasty.

Good its scandalous that they have the rights to England away games No different then when SKY had it though. You still need to pay for it. All England games should be FREE to watch.

They are very poor, I'm all for there not being a monopoly but if you want to rival the other company you have to beat or at least match the coverage which Setanta don't - their coverage is apalling, the picture quality is unbelievably poor and I for one am glad they lost the second package...
In fact, I have just come off the service as they put me up to full price having had nearly 2 yrs at £5/month - they ring every single day to try and get me back too - they be fooked

I'd like to see ALL pay to view channels go bust and it would happen if people were sensible and stopped paying their ridiculous fees, then we'd get live footie on the beeb and the players would stop getting stupid wages !

I would rather pay for pay per view tv as you call it such as setanta or sky sports as it is something I want to watch in comparison to pay the ridiculous tv licence fee which is more than £11 per month now and get a load of shit such as strictly come dancing shit, who's fucking around in the jungle and that twat adrian childs trying to convince everyone that west brom are good!!!! Enough said!!!

All hail Bexhillpootter, absolutely spot on. Overpriced pay channels and overpaid footballers both need culling.

That's old news that's been kicking around since the Premier League rights bids a couple of months ago.
Actually I quite like Setanta - cheap and cheerful - and at £12 I'm not sure how it's a rip off - at least you don't have to sign up to £20's worth of crap before you even qualify to spend even more money on the Sports Channels.

If that happened, the licence fee would rise and Stoke wouldn't be able to pay the likes of Beattie and Abdoulaye so they would go abroad..... just wouldn't happen

I hope not. In Canada, Setanta is about my only option for decent football coverage.

Makes me laugh when people slate the BBC licence fee - for which you get some half decent TV/radio (such as listening to the game on Radio Stoke). Yet they are perfectly happy to pay 5 times as much each month for 5000 channels of trash TV filled with hours upon hours of adverts so they can watch a few football games a week.

The good thing I see with Setanta going bump (hopefully) is that Sky will pretty much get a monopoly on the footy. Which means they will end up paying less to the Premier League for their rights, thus clubs getting less money and leading to more equality between the PL and the FL. I'm sure there is more to it than that mind...

Good, I hate Setanta but I have Sky so hopefully Sky will get most of the rights back I thought the same but Sky will probably increase the PPV matches to cover the "new" games. The other thing is where does the Setanta money go to in terms of League Club payments. It's bad enough for many just now and less money in the game may force more into trouble.

DrGonzo, The problem with the licence fee is not the cost of it but the fact you don't have a choice in buying it and that it is wasted by unaccountable people. If the BBC was a pay to view/listen service it would be bankrupt in 6 months.
