Ok they won what is now the UEFA cup in 1969, fair play, that's a fine achievement, but that's it! When you look at what other clubs have acheived since then, how can they claim "big club" status????
These are some of the teams that have won more major trophies than Newcastle Utd Since 1970.
STOKE CITY Oxford Utd Portsmouth Sunderland Norwich City Wolves Man City West Ham Luton Town
Enough said!

FA Cup:
Coventry Ipswich Southampton
League Cup:
Middlesbrough Leicester (x2)
English top flight:
Derby (x2) Notts Forest Leeds Blackburn
Newcastle piss me off with their big club mentality, nothing would give me more pleasure than to see Chelsea rag 'em on Saturday and then for us to beat them at The Brit. Hopefully if that happens they will be 5 or 6 points adrift and on their way to play fizzy pop football at Swansea, Peterborough, Blackpool and Doncaster

Newcastle fans absolutely amaze me, they are so blinkered and utterly up themselves they actually think Newcastle are massive!
Last night I heard Don Hutchinson (Newcastle fan) almost fall off his chair he was that staggered that someone suggested Tottenham were as big as Newcastle!
To be honest Tottenham and Newcastle mean nowt to me I don't like or hate either of them but clearly Tottenham are a bigger club than Newcastle in every single way. But to hear Hutchinson it was like he thinks Newcastle are up there with Liverpool and Arsenal as opposed to being a perrenial Premier struggler (apart from one or two good seasons a decade ago)
Another Newcastle fan phoned in and said Newcastle fans were thew problem cos they only wanted ex heros as their manager and Shearer probably wouldn't work. At this point I thought he might be from planet earth. But then he continued ' we were never going down anyway so it won't be Shearer that saves us' and then 'we should get Beardsley as manager!!'

So, throw in Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and, in the space of a few minutes, we've managed to find between 20 and 30 clubs that have won major trophies since Newcastle last won anything. (No doubt there are many more with a little more thought).
Some BIG CLUB!

It doesn’t get much bigger than that.

If you look at the Premiership, Newcastle, West Brom, Wigan, Hull, Bolton and Fulham have all failed to win a trophy more recently than the Potters. We truly are massive.

Just to play devils advocaat then...if Newcastle are so shyte how come they get 50,000 plus for home games and have a waiting list of 30 years for season tickets.. And whenever I've been up to Newcastle upon Tyne I've only ever seen Newcastle tops NEVER Man U/Arsenal/Chelsea etc etc If only we could say that about Stoke on Trent

They have not got Man U, Man City, Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa, Derby, Wolves, Birmingham, WBA etc etc on their doorstep

Big club bullocks! Never too big to go down, and they could well do with it to wake up to the reality that they have been treading water for too long, kidding themselves they are better than they are...Glory nights in the Champions league, forget it! Next season away to MK Dons. Simples!

Just so many teams that have won things in the last 38-39 years whilst Newcastle have been sleeping, how long does a giant have to be sleeping to be no longer classed as a giant. We were a big club in the 70s and early 80s, by the early-mid 90s we could no longer really claim that, but I always felt we had big club potential. That's all Newcastle are, a decent sized club with the potential to be a big club.

banksy: The line he drew was a whole massive 2 years before our one and only, major trophy (Take your point)
But, to be fair, it does give Newcastle almost 40 years to 'back up' their big club claims.
The 50,000 crowds are a 'recent' phenominon(?) up there. They've had big crowds off and on in their history as have most major English clubs. But let's not forget that they averaged less than 20,000 not so very long ago and nearly slipped into the third tier of English football (If only Port Vale could have beaten them).
If crowds were the decider, they would be in competition with clubs like Sheffield Wed/Charlton and many many more over the years.
ALSO:
Quite apart from the huge competition we face in terms of major cities and 'top' clubs omn our doorstep, you have to consider the size of Newcastle V the size of Stoke. When you measure their crowds as a proportion of the population, we fair pretty well as we are a fraction of the size.
In fact, when you factor that into crowd sizes, we come out as a very well supported club indeed.

Ah! The old 'Toon Army are the biggest and most loyal fanbase in the world' chestnut...I love being able to refer back to the facts! Errrm - it took a promotion-winning campaign in 92/93 to lift their attendances out of the doldrums. (The only other season where they got anywhere near 30K back then was another promotion season - glory hunters, anyone?). So, I'd like to know where the loyal countless thousands were back then? : 1992/1993 Division One (New) 1(C) 29,048 1991/1992 Division Two (Old) 20, 21,012 1990/1991 Division Two (Old) 11, 16,879 1989/1990 Division Two (Old) 3, 21,579 1988/1989 Division One (Old) 20(R), 22,815 1987/1988 Division One (Old) 8, 21,059 1986/1987 Division One (Old) 17, 24,792 1985/1986 Division One (Old) 11, 23,434 1984/1985 Division One (Old) 14, 26,228 1983/1984 Division Two (Old) 3(P), 29,881 1982/1983 Division Two (Old) 5, 24,116 1981/1982 Division Two (Old) 9, 17,276 1980/1981 Division Two (Old) 11, 16,001

I don't think anyone would argue that they are small time, but I guess I was saying that there are a few clubs, Newcastle, Sunderland, Bolton, Us etc that like to have pretension sof being a big club. Newcastle's claim is decent but it's no better than anyone else's, including ours really.

What I hate the most... "this club and it's fans don't deserve to be relegated".... what a load of bollocks, any team not good enough deserves to be relegated, and as for the fans what set of fans would deserve to suffer relegation? Maybe the ones with dilusions of grandeur??
