The Messiah found walking across the Tyne a little difficult the second time around so now they have apparently called for God to avoid walking on the water and simply part the waves and drown their enemies in a torrent of gushing verbal diarrhoea.
That seems to be the headline most papers have run with, it’s now just a matter of playing those irritating eight games and they can all get on with their dreams of Champions League next season. If any other club had come up with this scenario of handing the reigns to a man who has absolutely no experience whatsoever they would be a laughing stock. It would be condemned as a desperate act of a sinking ship. Though this is Newcastle and so the usual rules don’t seem to apply. We have had some ex players openly pronouncing Newcastle safe before they have actually kicked a ball under Shearer. I have no axe to grind with Shearer himself, he’s been pretty fair to us all season and who knows he may just stoke the fires at Newcastle and get them moving but somehow I doubt it, that doesn’t mean they can’t survive but it looks one hell of a task.
I heard some gushing reporter saying, it’s amazing Newcastle are most people’s second team and everyone will want them to survive. Oh really, why is that because they are a perceived as a big club and it would be tragic if a club like Newcastle were relegated while the likes of Stoke survived. It seems some no longer believe the league should be based on your results but some new formula should be worked out where you only go down if the experts don’t like you, a sort of X Factor for the Premiership. So forget points and games left, forget the final league positions relegation and promotion from here on would be decided by the voting media or a public vote stage managed by ITV, BBC, Talk sport. Well if this happens Mike Ashley would have appointed God in error.
So why exactly would it be such a loss to the Premiership if Newcastle went down, the Premiership seemed to manage fine without them before so why suddenly are they irreplaceable. I am sure they were spouting the same garbage when Nottingham Forest and Leeds United dropped from sight and disappeared from the radar. Has the Premiership suffered unduly from their absence did the walls down and oceans rush in to claim the Premiership for it’s own because of either, of course not. If you look at both of those examples they had achieved far more than the Geordies in terms of trophies in the last 40 years.
It seems it would be a tragedy of biblical proportions if the great supporters of Newcastle had to slum it once more in the Championship, they deserve so much more. Why are they any more deserving than other supporters, do other clubs not have supporters worthy of such sentiments. The only thing that makes Newcastle a big club in the eyes of the world is 55,000 people go and watch them, that’s loyalty for sure but where were those supporters before Keegan arrived the first time, supporters only come in large numbers when they believe success is just around the corner. Will Newcastle have 55,000 if they once more slump into the wilderness for a year or so possibly but in reality those greatest supporters in the country will once more dwindle to the hardcore until they once more rise to the top. Will they sill be the best supporters in the country and deserving of such blind support for survival if there’s 35,000 less each week.
Football is a world of joy and tragedy and each year there’ll be many sets of deserving supporters sat devastated as their heroes fall short and tragedy strikes but the only thing that actually counts in a relegation battle is finishing above the line and any club who achieves that deserves to do so irrespective of whether they get 55,000 or 25,000. The only numbers that matter are the points tally not the attendance figures.

Two or three times in the past few weeks, I've heard the phrase from jounalists, ex players and pundits alike that, 'The Premier League NEEDS Newcastle.
Has anyone got the slightest idea what this trite piss means?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Premier League will cope just fine should it lose what has traditionally been a bit of a yo-yo club.

Newcastle like the majority of clubs need the Premiership not the other way around. The only thing the Premiership needs is for the Sky money to keep rolling in if it ever stops and nobody matches it, 90% of the Premiership will need a very large intensive care unit

If any other club had come up with this scenario of handing the reigns to a man who has absolutely no experience whatsoever they would be a laughing stock. It would be condemned as a desperate act of a sinking ship. Though this is Newcastle and so the usual rules don’t seem to apply. As you have identified, this is an act of desperation, but I think it is a good appointment for the club. Shearer's lack of experience matters little for me, I think he's just going to be there as an inspirational figure with others providing the technical skills picked up when earning badges and through on the job experience - sure he'll have a say but he's going to be steered heavily by others. His job is to be a dressing room presence of titanic proportion. He can stand there and say he's sweat and bled for his club and scored a sack full of goals while he was at it and that the players had best do the same and quick 'cause he's the fucking man and there are 50,000 dickheads going out of their tiny minds in st james' park to prove it. Whatever some think about shearer tarnishing his reputation if they are relegated, I think this is a no-lose situation for all involved and about the first shrewd move Ashley has managed since taking over.

It is relatively few years ago that Newcastle faced a 'do or die' game with Port Vale to stay in the First Division (now CCC). Their crowds had dwindled to less than 20,000 and they were a 'joke'. They have NOT always been massively supported and can only in recent years claim to have such huge support.
They are no different to any other club and, in my opinion, a spell of reality outside of the Premier League would be a sobering and beneficial experience for their thousands of 'Johnny Come Lately' fans. If ever a dose of soul searching and self appraisal were needed it's at St James's Park.

A great post -
I fully agree that i dont understand where the disillusioned geordies think they are such a big club? ln my eyes Leeds(Revie's dominant team and a very good team under david o leary) and Notts forest (2x european cup winner lets not forget) are massive compared to them.........
why exactly are their fans so great? they only have 1 team in the city = common cause, whereas all other big cities (exception of leeds) have 2 teams and therefore less unity ........ their noise has been very poor since bobby robson got the sack and our no worthy to be in the premiership then Man united would be if they went down in the future ... football is a game that constantly changes very quickly... ask leeds fans!!! heres hoping the now cocky geordies go down with their 3rd messiah in the healm (shearer was a great player for england though and have no issues with him watsoever)
