Reading Steven Howard in the Sun this morning
Apparently Ashley Cole was worth a 7 last night, was solid and played well
Eeerm, was this the same Cole that kept passing straight to their players, or was caught in possession several times, or at best kept knocking floaty long balls straight to their centre half? Was a 4/5 at best!
Also, Glen Johnson was given a 4, and described as a 'poor' performance
I'm not a fan, but thought he played OK? At least a steady 6/7
Obviously they are kissing Rooneys ass (8), and there are the usual comments re the Lennon/Becks input (Lennon not taking his chance, England retuning to slow turgid play with Becks, even though he nearly scored and set up the winner....)
On the other hand, you had David Pleat, Andy Townshend and Teddy Sheringham jizzing over Lennon on ITV, despite the fact he was utter garbage in the first half - one decent cross - the lad rushes far too much and can't pick a pass out. He is quick and exciting down the channel (not last night but normally), but can't compliment that with a decent ball in.
Pleat talks utter nonsense most of the time, and anything Tottenham is talked up at the expense of anything sensible. ("I wouldn't have taken Lennon off" - thats why Capello has won titles, cups etc all over Europe and is the highest profile international manager, and you managed to win the League cup twice David, beofre being sacked for kerb crawling...)
Any other bizarre press interpretations of the game around?
Be interesting to see the variations in marks across the papers.
(I'll expect the ususal 'don't read the Sun then' type comments though :-) , but the sport sections are normally pretty good!)
The Robo10 jury:
James (4), Johnson (6), A Cole (4), Ferdinand (6), Terry (7), Lennon (5), Lampard (6), Barry (6), Gerrard (7), Rooney (8), Crouch (6) Subs Beckham (6), SWP (5), Jagielka (6) Dull game, good win.

I didnt hear the ITV commentary but posted elsewhere that I expect Pleat spent the game bigging up Lennon!....Spot on about both Lennon and Cole. Cole seemed to be half asleep for most of the match and Lennon apart from running very fast isn't good enough on the ball and for a wide player his crossing is woeful

cole was shit and deserves your 4
no way I'd give gerrard a 7 - he was anonymous for large parts of the game

Sorry what did you say? Was looking at your avatar in detail!
Oh yeah Gerarrd :-)
Thought he was OK, he and Rooney will do well down that left channel together.

I think you watch a different game robo10.
Gerrard disappeared for most of the game which is why Cole was left exposed with nobody to pass to. Watch the game again if you can stay awake long enough and you might spot this.
You are obviously a Gerrard fan to give him a 7.

Cole is a highly paid professional footballer who obviously has talent.
Getting caught in possession outside your own box several times, getting caught while performing backheels and tricks, looking slow and cumbersome (and almost ill - I feel lethargic like that today!) isn't Gerrards fault.
If he wasn't there, then Rooney generally was, but the ball played was often poor.
I'm not that big a fan of Gerarrd if honest, he dives too much for me, but you can't blame him when Cole is having a stinker - it was interesting at times watching it that even though he was in acres of space they chose not to pass to him...just one of those games I guess.

If he wasn't there, then Rooney generally was, but the ball played was often poor. As I said, watch it again robo you will see your recollection is incorrect. I'm not saying Cole had a great game, but he was left exposed so it won't have helped him. I always thought Bridge was worth trying but having seen him when we played Man City he was distinctly average.

Agree, left back is a problem. Dicko - all is not lost...! Can't agree on the exposed bit - they only had 2 attackers and 8 defenders :-)
Surprised they haven't given Leighton Baines a go, looks decent and can strike a ball.

wembley to be fair both Gerarrd and Rooney were fairly decent down the left in the first half and Cole was still abysmal then..most over rated full back in World football!

I personally thought Lennon had a far better game than he did against Slovakia, his final ball was much better, and he is always a threat with his pace and ability to beat a man.
I think Gerrard had another solid game but i can't help but think he is being wasted played wide left instead of in the centre.
Barry played more as a holding midfielder last-night than he did against Slovakia, the main problem with the Slovakia performance was a lack of a holding midfielder so i'm glad he addressed that, but for me Carrick is a better holding player than Barry.
Like most people i'm always a bit concerned with David James in goal, i personally think Chris Kirkland is the best english goalkeeper available, it's just a case of keeping him fit.
Overall a solid performance, qualification is all about points really and it's encouraging we managed to snatch the game late on against an unbeaten side without really getting out of third gear.

Gerrard hardly spent any time on the left. I think you boys should stop watching the match in the pub

I have to say I thought Lennon played fairly well considering. He's a new addition to the starting eleven and still finding his feet, he put in two or three decent crosses although nothing came of them.
I don't understand why Capello brought Lennon off so early on when it seemed to be working well enough and replaced him with Beckham when what we were severely lacking in the second half was someone to run at the full back and get crosses in.
Same old England if you ask me 1-0 up and in control so we take our foot right off the pedal and well a 1-0 lead is never enough even when teams aren't posing much of a threat, there's always a threat from set pieces.

I agree about Cashley Cole last night, yet another toss performance. I cannot remember if he has ever had a good game for England, you have to feel sorry for people like Wayne Bridge and maybe even Leighton Baines, who dont ever seem to get a chance to oust that tosser from the starting XI.
I thought Lampard was his usual, anonymous self again last night but other than that I thought the rest did ok. As said, Lennon is still finding his feet, sure, he didnt set the world alight but he gave it his best, thought Crouchy done ok too, good too see him running about everywhere, wanting the ball.
Im still worried that we have David James in goal though, what the f**k was he doing when that shot cannoned off his shoulder?!

Ash Cole deserves the criticsm here for last nights lapses
however he HAS,imho, played well for England (yes I know he's a twat)
Steve Claridge made the point on monday on the radio that Cole plays well in a 442 but the minute England depart from that or have a player drifting in from the left his game goes to pot.

I got bored 10 minutes into the second half and started the Guardian Crossword. Bunch of overpaid Prima Donna's managed by a bloke with a humour bypass and the charisma of my left testicle.

I like Capello. He is a proper football manager.
Wouldn't hurt to smile occassionally, but seems to know his stuff.

its good to see that our fans have sense ..
agree with most of the ratings
Ashley cole was very poor and needs to be given a rest to clear his mind and its not on the pitch at the moment.
However he was not the only 1 who had a bad game ... I dont understand how people can honestly say gerrard had a good game for someone supposedly the best footballer in the world at present, what did he actually do? the free kick on 15mins and thats it? solid at best. Rooney was the 1 who controlled the game.
With the new system capello has adopted crouch does not fit in (did well for the goal though and is a different option on the bench), hes not mobile enough to run down the wings and move the defenders for the midfield to come flooding through. We need Pace up front ( a heskey like player who can score would be ideal, but where are they or coming through in england)
good win though as we could have easily not got the 2nd goal, should be able to look forward 2 south africa now

I think Cole was crap,I also found it hard to think of anyone who deserved any more than a six,Lennon and Wright Phillips are both the same, their legs move faster than their brains. they both run with their heads down and put the ball where they think people are instead of seeing where they are

Ashley Cole was shit, and has been ever since his move to Chelski. Even down Stoke he was completely overshadowed by Bosingwa. Last night just about summed him up for me, he got lucky on several occasions when he tried stupid turns, add that to the numerous times he was caught in possession or just gave it away needlessly. Oh, and we can't forget the customary fall to the floor and wave your arms at the ref skit.
Quite frankly I'd rather have Higginbotham.
