My sister has just emailed her conversation with her taxi driver in Kuala Lumpa.
Him: "Where are you from" Me: "England" Him "Where in England" Me "Nottingham" Him "Oh yes, Nottingham Forest, Brian Clough" Me "Yes. Do you like football then?" Him "Yes. I support Liverpool. Who do you support" Me "Stoke." Him (6,000 miles away from Stoke): "They will survive this season. Only 9 games left" Me "Do you think so? Keep your fingers crossed" Him "Liverpool having good season. Beat Man U, beat Aston Villa 5-0, beat Real Madrid" Me "Didn't beat Stoke"
Silence...for an hour.
Class!!

Stokie exiles must be having that sort of conversation all over the globe - and isn't it great?
Every year when I go skiing I seem to get into a conversation about football teams with the locals and used to get pretty blank looks when I mentioned I supported Stoke. This year I was chatting to an Italian on a chair lift in La Plagne, Fance. He supported Juventus and when I said I supported Stoke, quick as a flash he said "I watched them against ManU at Christmas and you were unlucky - they should have had two sent off. And beating Man City yesterday when you were down to ten men is impressive". Love it? You bet! ;D

Same thing happening over here. A year ago when I mentioned Stoke I would get the "blank" look, even from the few preople I have met who regularly watch Premier League games and are quite knowledgable. It's a different story this year, and it seems most people I speak to have a soft spot for us and want us to survive. Our new found fame does come with a downside though, such as me having to sufffer weeks of piss taking from a Moroccan Chelski fan who works in the local 7-11. I had been telling him all season that we would beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge, and I avioded the place like the plague for a few weeks after our last minute collapse.
I did have a "Manchester Yoo" fan congratulate me when we beat City, and he was also quite complimentary about our performance against the Shit when they beat us 1-0 at the Brit.

Beautiful tale. No longer will us Stoke fans have to confuse people with the team we support trying to explain what division we are in, whilst out on our travels overseas.

People taking the piss out of us cos we lost to a last minute goal away to Chelsea! How far have we come!!!! I used to think it was a moral victory if we only lost by the odd goal at home And to think that was only three years ago
