Now we just need a 'Ashley backs Kinnear/Hughton'.
Then it's full steam ahead..

You'd think now would be a ideal time to sack him, nobody could really accuse them of not giving him a fair crack of the whip, they've only won 1 in god knows how many games, and they have a 2 week break to get a new manager in which could give them a boost and they might win a couple of games on the back of it.
It's good for us though, lets hope GS keeps doing whatever it is he keeps doing that is stopping them from picking points up, because to be fair, they look a half decent side, their obvious problem is scoring goals.
Credit to them for sticking with him though.

Their chairman has 'shown faith' in his managers before. I have no love for him, Southgate or Middlesborough but it IS refreshing to see a chairman backing his manager in adversity and backing his own judgement in appointing him. He may be right, he may be wrong but I have to say well done to him for standing up to be counted.
Whether or not that faith continues into next season if they are relegated is anybody's guess.

They have played us now so there is no need to bring in a new manager just in time surprisingly to play us. Good news that is!.
Now I turn my attention to the rumours of "Venables to Newcastle".

There was Boro fan on here a day or two back who thought that Gibson had briefed Southgate to clear out the squad this year. The story went that Gibson felt that Hull and Stoke would be automatic relegation fodder and so Boro would only have to avoid one spot this season. The plan was to off-load some unwanted players, absorb a poor season and then build again next season.
The Boro fan thought that because Gibson is responsible for making that key decision he is standing by Southgate who will therefore keep his job even if they go down.
Not sure I believe it, but I could believe that he will keep his job, Gibson is a very good chairman for backing his managers.

TBH im not sure what el Tel could do at Newcastle with what 7 or 8 games remaining? The problems at Newcastle are very large and their run-in is terrible

Somehow I feel sorry for Southgate
Earlier in the season I was talking to the Boro fanzine editor. Alves at £12m was seen as a bargain as he scored over 50 goals last season with 7 or 8 scored in 1 match!
Tuncay was on a free
Southgate resisted the offers for Downing
Players like Huth who was good against us in fairness and Wheater (England U21 international)
In fairness, looking at that squad at the start of the season Boro fans were quite optimistic about a top 10 finish never mind a relegation scrap
The flip-side of all this is the fact that Boro are currently occupying a relegation spot leaving potentially 1 less for us to fall into!

ye i seen this on SSN earlier and am delighted as i cant really see him turning it around IMO. They have some decent players and at times looked very good on the ball on Sat but have no cutting edge and didnt really create any great goalscoring opportunities. Downing was shite Sat and is one the most over-ratted players i have ever seen and the only reason he is ever in the England team is because he is left-footed.
That said Boro have some decent players and i wouldnt mind O'Neil or one or 2 others to help us build next season
