It's all becoming much clearer now with the sides from Bolton down fighting against the drop. Brazil look down and Boro very likely too so one place between 7 teams, with our current form things are looking pretty good .... Fingers Crossed stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/PR/oform.html

Yes, as I posted yesterday, the current form table gives us plenty of reasons to be cautiously optimistic.

Its in our hands, its gonna be a nail biter. If we can get three wins on the bounce now (WBA, Newcastle and Blackburn), I'd like to think we would be safe. A big ask, but I believe. GOARNNN STOKE!

Recent results seem to be going for us as well.
Think it is helpful if it's still tight at the top too. Rafa certainly has form for playing a weakened side before Champs League games, and Utd play Hull on the last day. All the top 6 still need every point, and I hope it stays like that, so hopefully they will not play weaker teams toward the end of the season.

It's great to know we can still finish 4th. I don't know how. Also on the current form table we would be able to enjoy the last game of the season in comfort as we would be well clear by then. Another interesting thing is that out of the bottom teams we are the only one where our current form is better than the season overall, which can't be bad.

Sutton:
I think clubs like ours can look at the situation calmly and objectively. It would not be a disaster for either of us to go down but clearly we both desperately want to stay up. For ourselves, we are fighting like 'lions' (resisted the urge) and I'm sure Hull are doing the same. It's much more of a shock to the system for clubs like Middlesbrough and castle who have been there for a long period. They are staring relegation in the face and it could be disasterous for either/both of them. That just makes their performances more nervy by the week.
Hopefully, it will be the complacent ones that now face disaster that will fall.

Still think this season is absolutely pivotal in our development.
We stay up, we attract better players, more income, we progress and stay up again and so on.
Look outside the top 4. Villa and Everton are more consistent than us, and are obviously capable of picking up considerably more points away from home. Then Wigan, West Ham, Fulham... all avoided the drop by the skin of their teeth in the last few seasons.
We can compete at home against anybody in the League, and are not far away from a decent Premiership side. Compared to the side that came up, which needed a bit of a re-build, if we develop this squad with a few tweaks we will surely improve.
Stay up this season (which I have always hoped we would, but now believe we will) and the future for SCFC looks bright.

One good thing is that
a) There title race will be tight b) The race for europe is tight
This means that teams at the top wont be doing the usual trick of putting out weakened sides

Surely 10 points should do it? It would be very surprising if 42 was not enough. 3 wins and a draw from our 8 remaining games - more than happy with that.

As bizare as it sounds we could be very nearly safe in 2 weeks time. We've got 2 very winnable games coming up while our rivals have got tough games.
Saturday, 4 April 2009 Blackburn v Tottenham, Bolton v Middlesbrough, Newcastle v Chelsea,
Saturday, 11 April 2009 Liverpool v Blackburn, Middlesbrough v Hull, Stoke v Newcastle

we could do without twats like hodgson & his fulham side only putting effort in against the top sides(man ure) though. it looked to me as if they couldn`t really be arsed against hull & blackburn, that is a fucking wanky trick. they are still expected to compete even if they are `safe`. other than that, our form & home record gives us an exceptional chance & leaves fate in our own hands.

Although it was important for us that Sunderland and Hull lost yesterday, it was probably just as important (maybe even more important) that Man U lost and Liverpool won this weekend.
As both teams still have to play plenty of the teams at the bottom, and both will really have the bit between their teeth for sometime to go yet.
I can't see Newcastle, Boro or the Baggies getting to 39 points, so I expect the cut off point to be LOWER than 40 points.
Indeed if we beat West Brom and Chelsea beat Newcastle in the next game, then we could be going into our next home match knowing that a win (although not mathematically safe) will almost certainly mean that we will be in the Premiership next season.

the only thing that confuses me is that all season people have been saying 38-40 will be enough. Now we're closing in on that people have changed to us needing 42 or even 44!! Where have these figures come from? Can you really see M'boro, N'Castle, Hull, B'Burn etc. getting another 11 or 12 points to require us needing 44????? What form are you basing that on exactly? 8 points MAXIMUM needed

Completly agree Mr. Spencer (and gaz); the fact that the title race is open along with the race for europe could be just as important to us as the games we have against those around us.
I'm glad uniteds slip up came against Fulham, who are safe, than say Baggies or whoever as it gives them a kick up the arse; spurs liverpool and chelsea on to keep scrapping but doesn't really affect the relegation scrap in terms of one teams confidence or points!
I now believe we will stay up rather than hope: The fixtures and the sheer number of candidates for relegation (many of whom are playing a lot worse than us right now) leads me to believe that 38 should see us safe just, and 40+ could even be comfortable. The great thing is I expect us to take more than 8 more points from the games we've got. ROLL ON THE BAGGIES!
