I was telling a mate how I think that Shawcross will play for England one day, as seems to be the view of a lot of people on here, and he came back saying all of the following are better:
Rio Ferdinand Wes Brown John Terry Michael Mancienne Jamie Carragher (if he unretired from international football) Curtis Davies Zat Knight Phil Jagielka Joleon Lescott Titus Bramble (sounds ludicrous but has been superb recently) Matthew Upson Michael Dawson Ledley King Jonathan Woodgate Micah Richards Nedum Onuoha Michael Turner Gary Cahill Sol Campbell Anton Ferdinand Calum Davenport Steven Taylor David Wheater Chris Riggott
I say half of them are not a patch on Ryan and most of the rest will be long retired by the time he reaches his peak. A Shawcross/ Wheater partnership for World Cup 2016 is on the cards I reckon.

Basically, your mate has just tried to think of every English centre half he can think of and ended up looking like a right dick!

There's no doubting that he has the potential. His performances in his debut Premier League season as a 20 year old (he's 21 now I know) have been nothing short of superb. The major issue for me is how the feck the lad isn't considered for the U-21's? Mind you we have got an U-21 manager who when he picked his first squad as Forest's caretaker boss, needed his wife to point out he hadn't picked a keeper in his starting XI!

Y - Better than Shawcross N - Shawcross is better Y/N - Tough one
Rio Ferdinand - Y Wes Brown - Y John Terry - Y Michael Mancienne - N Jamie Carragher (if he unretired from international football) - Y Curtis Davies - Y/N Zat Knight - N Phil Jagielka - Y Joleon Lescott - Y Titus Bramble (sounds ludicrous but has been superb recently) - N Matthew Upson - Y Michael Dawson - N Ledley King - Y/N (He only plays about 6 games a season, part-timer) Jonathan Woodgate - Y Micah Richards - Y/N Nedum Onuoha - Y/N Michael Turner - N Gary Cahill - N Sol Campbell - N Anton Ferdinand - N Calum Davenport - N Steven Taylor - N David Wheater - Y/N Chris Riggott - N
So, by my carefully thought out evaluation, Shawcross is in the top 10 English centre backs in the league. It may sound a little biased but recently he's been fantastic. It also confirms that your mate talks absolute horseshit.

The fact that Pearce considers some of the following better is a disgrace imo:
Kieran Gibbs Arsenal Michael Mancienne Chelsea Nedum Onuoha Manchester City Micah Richards Manchester City Andrew Taylor Middlesbrough Steven Taylor Newcastle United David Wheater Middlesbrough

Yeah thats pretty much what he's like for us, just wanted to know what he was like at a lower level. He's a bit of a fans favourite... until Southgate picks him and they're reminded of how average he is. He doesn't have a clue how to play against fast players.

I think you have a case with 1 or 2 on that list, but I think you're a little deluded. He's certainly not better than Michael Turner who has been our best player by a country mile all season, with a couple of decent defenders around him, we'd still be in the top half. He is very much in Capello's thoughts for the full England squad, and is being touted by Liverpool, yet Shawcross is continually ignored for the under 21's. He's got potential, but he's got a long way to go yet

Sutton:
So you'll be utterly shocked to the core when he gets called up later this year?
Mark my words. he IS a future England CH. (Probably would have left us for loads of money though)

Sutton: So you'll be utterly shocked to the core when he gets called up later this year? Mark my words. he IS a future England CH. (Probably would have left us for loads of money though) The key word there is 'future'. I don't deny he's got potential, but he's looked a bit raw when I've seen him. He's probably not consitent enough yet, wasn't he dropped from your team for a while this season?

Our Tone likes to keep em on their toes Sutton and Ryan was left out for a few games. You are right, he's just 21 and he has at times been a bit raw but he's got huge potential and he has improved massively as the season has worn on. I'm probably a bit optimistic with @this year' but I really do think he's that good. Many of those listed earlier, I don't rate at all.

I think he's a future England CB too. Had an absolute shocker against Bolton opening game of the season, but since he got back into the starting line up he's been solid. Then again he is playing next to Lord Abdoulaye, and I reckon I'd look solid next to him too.
Future return to the Shit in a few seasons when Rio is on his way out?
