My thoughts upon leaving the ground today
we won, against a team actually playing better football through out and yet, we persevered, never gave up and gradually improved as the game went on.
First half performance I thought pretty shocking, none of our players had any 'touch' at all either, over/under hitting passes and hardly two were made together.
Fortunately our two front men were giving the oppositions centre halves (all three of them major problems) and the bit I really disliked about the Boro (to offset the good football they tried to play) was the general diving about and willingness of large uncompromising defenders to try and get our lads booked / sent off.
and so half time came and went
Sometimes I wonder about Tony Pulis too - for instance, why did he leave Salif on for the first five minutes of the second half to then substitute him to the obvious and embarrassing joy of the crowd (out of all the first halves poor performances his was quite the worst) (again )
most odd and makes you wonder about supertone.
Then, as the game goes on the crowd again reacts - somewhere between 60 & 70 minutes its as if someone turns up the volume knob and , the crowd noise increases meanwhile, the team actually starts to get its act together and look more threatening.
(just think how noisy it would be if the main stand actually joined in too - maybe they just prefer to rattle their jewellry?)
Then , a hardly noticed substitution of tactical genius - On comes Sidibe and the central defenders don't know who to mark.
In nips Shawcross twice - first a dry run - the second for the clinching goal off a Delap Throw in but, just watching match of the day witness Sidibe 'wrestling off' not one but Two tall Boro defenders to make room for Shawcrosses run
hardly noticed but crucial to our win.
As usual we panicked after getting our nose in front but held on
I just wish we had played better but then again, maybe, playing not so well and yet still winning now proves we have actually arrived at this level.
SO
well done Stoke City - well done Tony Pulis ( again )
As for the crowd today - vociferous, nasty, biased, hostile and well up for it !
and I loved every single minute of being part of it !
long may it continue
ps - season ticket renewed after the match !

good assessment. Interesting question .......If Ryan hadn't scored, would we have got a penalty for the obvious foul on Sidibe?? No!! Thought not!!!

I agree about Sidibe's contribution to Ryan's goal, Tony. He was obviously brought on for the specific purpose of giving their three centre backs an extra big striker to worry about and it worked like a charm. I doubt if Ryan's run would have been so unopposed if Mama hadn't been there. Well done Tone.

We played like the away team yesterday. It was almost a smash and grab raid. But we won. It's three points against a relegation rival. I'm happy ;D.

Yep it was uglier than a bag of bosted frogs, the beauty came with the scoreline, the crowd and our resilience to grind out a massive victory. Well done to all concerned.

Hmmmm, to be honest I don't think we were any uglier than they were.

I agree with Joe, I don't think we were worse than them. They knocked it around a bit in the first half, but no real cutting edge.....that isnt "pretty" football.

Q) When Have we ever won pretty this season ?
A) Hardly ever although, I would suggest we HAVE played a lot more relatively decent passing football in some of the other games.
Yesterday for an hour we hardly put two passes together (again ) defintely not up to 'standard '- even our standard.
and yet we won -- my point

The fact that we're winning games without playing particularly well (or, for 60 minutes yesterday, poorly) suggests we have come far. Is the Prem not as good as people make out? Excitement yes, not sure about genuine quality below the Top 6 or so. That said, it's brilliant sticking one in the eye of the purists.
Next season, should we stay up, another 3 or 4 signings and there's no reason why we couldn't establish ourselves.
Our home record, when you look at it, is amazing. I can recall loads of games this season where teams have failed to create virtually any decent chances. Boro probably had one presentable chance yesterday.

Have to agree, the passing and ability to control the ball, was at times woeful. At the end of the day though,a win is a win

in reference to the whole `win ugly` thing, todays news of the world stoke match report `claims` that stoke were the horrible bullying ugly side. Now i know we dont play much carpet football but from where i was sat it looked like boro were mostly doing the snide stuff & loads of diving. is it just me or does anyone think we mauled them? i just think that the report missed the fact that boro were on the whole a bit naughty.

The ugly side of our game is when we're not knocking it about (like we can actually !)
more, the graft and the work ethic and the set pieces
NOTW is a fucking comic anyways -so, does what they say matter a shite to anyone ?
