Kitson would still be "here" if he's only out on loan and we stay in the prem wouldn't he?

I would assume as part of the loan deal to Reading that we will receive a large sum if they are promoted, plus I'm sure they would then be keen to resign him on a permanent basis. All in all, I can't imagine we will have lost anywhere near the amounts people on here are talking about.

from official site, from what it says there. the 5.5 was up front.
18th July 2008 Dave Kitson - £5,500,000 from Reading
where as for other transfers it states the add ons.
Ibrahima Sonko - £2,000,000 from Reading (fee could rise to £2,250,000
Tom Soares - £1,250,000 from Crystal Palace (fee could rise to £2,000,000)
so maybe we did pay it up front?

I hope Kitson does score 10 for Reading before the season is out and I wish him well there. Didn't do it for the Mighty Potters but if we can recoup the cost( or most of it) , we move on and hopefully learn for the future.

is it shitsons fault he didnt fit in here with our set-up?
in my book it has to go down as a bad signing on behalf off TP, even if we all agreed it was a good signing at the time.
Its a good job Beattie has worked out as a brilliant signing otherwise the pressure on TP would be huge and a lot of people would be pointing the finger.

It is so difficult to work your way through the minefield that is the reporting of transfer fees in football today. If it is not "undisclosed", it is reliant on add-ons for appearances, goals, staying/going up, international caps etc. or paid in instalments over several years.
Most sensible judges of Kitson's transfer at the time reckon we paid closer to 3mill up front, so 2.5mill sounds about right. He has proven far too expensive even at that price!
If we get 1.5/2 mill back from Reading, I'd be happy enough. I'd expect any return transfer fee to be "undisclosed", so Tone saves face with regard to his transfer cock-up of buying the bugger in the first place.
Which brings me to my next point. Why all the vitriol aimed at Kitson? He was the wrong player signed by the wrong club at the wrong time. It was Pulis who bought him, who agreed to pay Reading top dollar for him, who thought he would fit into our team. It was Pulis who got it badly wrong, saved, albeit belatedly, by the inspired signing of James Beattie.
He has had as many, if not more, misses than hits in the transfer market since our promotion, but thankfully the hits - Sorensen, Adby Faye, Higginbotham, Etherington, Beattie (and Amdy Faye?) - have been such massive successes, on the whole, that they have outweighed the monumental failures - Kitson, Olofinjana, Sonko, Soares, Tonge and Davies - and played central roles in our still being in with a great chance of survival in our first season back in the big time.
Let's hope Tone spends his kitty a bit more wisely this coming summer.

I think there's no doubt he'll score a few in the Championship and the RAFs and Bayerns will never let us hear the end of it. Proves NOTHING
How many did Cresswell get in that division again???
Might be a good thing if he does and then we can unload him. Would Reading pay big money if they stay down??? I doubt it very much

Sonko is not a bad defender Bayern! He had a nightmare of a game versus Blackburn, but apart from that hasn't done too badly! A very good match away to Villa in my opinion too, defensively at least! ;D

Acres has just said he understands that we'll end up with "close to £5m" if he goes back to Reading in the summer.
With 6-figure loan fees and the precise figures on the initial deal as clear as mud, God knows the precise numbers, but it doesn't sound like we'll come out of it too badly at all, assuming these kind of figures are based on some kind of reality.

For what its worth I've always felt he is a good footballer + will score a hatful of goals wherever he ends up, BUT having heard his comments today it is clear he was never going to score at SCFC as his heart was never at the club. I'm sure that TP spends a lot of time researching potential new players; what a shame Kitson didn't do the same with Stoke as he could have saved us a lot of time and money when he realised we were not based in Berkshire, do not play in blue + white hoops and are not called Reading!

Pretty much agree with that. This move, if it does end up becoming permanent, is the best possible outcome for all concerned. The local media were suggesting that we'd recoup much of our outlay, so we can draw a line under this whole, rather forgettable episode if and when that happens. He's tripe. He was in a side that got religated. He came to us for a quick buck. End of James Beattie was once in a side that was ultimately relegated. Does that mean he's wank? Oh, sorry, I forgot; you thought he was a shit signing as well, didn't you?

And Doyle and Hunt were in the same side aswell and i'd take them tomorrow if offered. I totally agree with you that he's not been up to it for us but this argument that if an individual gets relegated in a team sport it automatically means he's shit is just daft.
The opposite comparison would be how players like Phil Neville and Dirk Kuyt seem to have a drawer full of medals .... are they automatically world class? I think not.
