The u18s recorded another 1..0 win at the Mich today by beating an in form WBA side. Albion were on a run that had seen them win six on the bounce including a four goal demolition of Liverpool.
It was particularly impressive performance given our second years had learned this week that they (other than Wedderburn) were not being offered pro deals at the club. They were a credit to themselves in putting in a fine performance to a man despite the disappointment they must be feeling.
Many will no doubt go on to have a good career elsewhere.

I'll bet West Brom played the better football though.

It was a very poor game of football. Very bity and scrappy, on the odd ocasion some football WAS played both sides looked good.
Albion tried the tip-tapy football that we have seen from their first team. and Stoke showed the same caracteristics from our first team, lump it up to 'the big man' up top, put in this case it was the not very big louis Moult, and in contray to what Mark wrote. I think Stoke players showed signs that the fact they weren't getting a pro deal got to them, they polayed with less heart than I've seen from them before

So, which are the second year players being released? Is it normal to just keep one of them on - and will it leave next year's U18 team VERY short of players? Or would all the second year's be too old for the U18s next season?

This years 2nd years were Nat, Salif Diao, Tom Harrison, Darren Brunt(3rd year), Yusuf Yilmaz, Richard Vauls and Ashley Page.
Last year we offered 4 pro deals to Danzelle St.Louis-Hamilton, Tom Thorley, Marc Grocott and Jimmy Phillips so I think it just depends on how good the players are. The difference between this year and last is that when we signed those 4 we were a Championship side now we are a PL club who, by the time they've been out on loan for 12 months/2 years, hope to be established in the top flight so the ability needed has gone through the roof. In my opinion Nat could cut it in the PL in the next 12/18 months. Hes one of the youngest 2nd years we have aswell as his birthday is 30th June so he just avoided the cut off point to being put back a year. He already has a huge frame, and has had for a while, so its probably better for him that hes turning pro now and he can get on with gaining experience as he has learnt all he can at U18 level.
We shouldn't be short because we have a lot of 1st years, possibly the most in the first XI out of any academy, and have also given scholarships to 7 U16's.

Cheers buxton - I suppose the few years after we reach the Prem (assuming we stay here) will be difficult as we probably haven't attracted many Premier standard youngsters in the past.
What about Louis Moult - wasn't he a second year?

I think Danzelle St.Louis-Hamilton is a very good prospect for the future

No Lou's a 1st year. Next year we should have a side that can compete with the best of 'em as the U16's coming through are supposedly top notch and our 1st years have really pushed on since the winter break, a fact that can be seen in results where we only have a controversial defeat to Manchester City in our last 6 games. They all look settled in now and next season could be a very successful one leading to quite a few contracts.
Louis Moult was training with the first team when he was 15, and is always involved with the reserves, as he was last season as an U16. TP also came out and publicly defended and praised him after he got sent off away at Arsenal reserves. I think he'll get a contract!

Cheers, Buxton. I do appreciate the info you and Mark W give us - hopefully Holland will feel that his plans include measures to keep the fans informed more about Academy matters. The Potters Foundation members (including me) would, I am sure appreciate more info.
An "open day" for Foundation members (perhaps in conjunction with a home game) would be nice - to introduce Holland, hear of his plans for the future and look at the plans for the revamp of the Mich etc.

Contray to what Mark wrote. I think Stoke players showed signs that the fact they weren't getting a pro deal got to them, they polayed with less heart than I've seen from them before I absolutely agree with that observation. I was impressed that despite it understandably affecting them, the lads concerned still had enough balls to win the game.

It is so important for SCFC that young players come thru the ranks and establish themselves in the first team squad.C anybody advise if we have some kiddies coming thru or is it a problem

Were any of those listed unlucky not to get terms or right decision?

Right or wrong decision ia always a matter of opinion in sport and football in particular.
The lads concerned will have been viewed at youth and reserve level by Adie Pennock and Mark O'Connor in particular. Tony Pulis has also viewed Academy and reserve games, John Rudge is a regular at Academy games. It will have no doubt been a collective call.
I suppose the point is that we are now a Premier League side and as such the bar has been raised. Any one coming through the ranks has to be viewed in that light or at least top Championship. I have no doubts that a few years ago when we were League 1 or bottom of the Championship then some of these lads would have had a good chance at a pro contract. Thats not to sy some of these lads will not go onto achieve things in football Many players rejected by one club have gone on to be internationals elsewhere.
As for the next batches coming through the current Youth Team is made uo predominently of first years and are doing better than we have in the Premier Academt League for years. I know when they turn second year next season and the squad is supplemented by the intake of this years u16s the club expect the Youth Team to be even better.
This suggests that the standards are being raised and the appointment of Steve Holland shows the club has every intent of being serious payers in the home grown game.
The simple economic truth is that we have to be let alone taking on board the rule changes that force clubs to develop their own stars..

Shame for the lads, obviously gutting for them. Darren Brunt was on my college course (well he was untill I quit midway through the first year) and he always seemed decent.
Buxton/Mark, any news on what happened with Ryan Capper (sp?)? Not to sure if I've got his name right. Captain of the U16s I believe (full-back/CB). Used to work with his father until I got laid off earlier this year.
Cheers for the info.

MW
I watched the under 10's today and the second match was abandoned due to the weather and Stoke running out of subs
Do you know why the young lads are not allowed to wear hats in the atrocious weather we saw this morning?

Mark is more in the know at U16 level than me I'm afraid. Ryan Connor is a 1st year for the U18's if thats who you mean.

Bloody hell Paul. I only watch Academy games not chose the clothing! ;D If any lad of mine had requested a hat because it was raining, I would have kicked his ass! Like Buxton I can only imagine the inquiry is about Ryan Conner who is as said a first year in the Youth Team now.

Hes playing well as they all are at the minute. Plays in CM now with Andy Nicholls and Danny Stockhall as we play 4-3-3. Got sent off last week but the referee did have a shocker and I couldn't see any reason for him to go.

couple of under 8's I got scouted with Crewestokie were promoted to the adavanced group after the first week, however it was a Friday evening and saturday morning, the worst place you want to be on a Friday evening is the M6, and a saturday morning was when there dads run the under 8's, sad to say they are now at Everton who have a more local training base on a friday evening. Hopefully Mr Holland can start to spread out a bit, after all Stoke and vale girls teams come to Northwich to play their football, it's not that far. Or the new community programme officer when he is appointed, well it's not me as they turned me down
