I've had the following comment on my youtube page from a manure fan about our song. "Fuckin stupid song. This is the iconic song of stoke city FC and how can children/women/families join in with this?" I guess he has a point, but that said, we don't seem to have much trouble at the Brit at finding people to sing it. I've got two small boys that will have no choice but to support Stoke in the future, (I will throw them out if they don't), and I'm not sure how I'm going to explain to them what our version of the song is about. Any tips?

They replace dick with knife (in words obviously!) in the Family bit and as they sing as loud as elsewhere then dont notice the word change. They really do make a lot of noise in the Family end
Away fom home - different story

I will guarantee that most kids over 5 are calling their mates at school dicks then had a bit of a chuckle that they have used the word after. Kids swear all the time when away from parents. I don't think the word dick is a major problem.

To be honest, my daughter aged seven heard it all very clearly in the away end at Swindon. She asked me "what were they singing?" so I decided not to lie! She's now 18. It doesn't seem to have done her any harm!

Good suggestion Suffolk if you can get them to sing that. I fear that Stafford is right though. Once they realise everyone sings 'dick' try stopping them. I've made a pact with my 15 + 13yr olds. Whatever goes on and whatever's said at the match (particularly by me) stays there and is not repeated at home. Worked so far.

I'd prefer the word "knife", it sounds more menacing

How dare a Manure fan assume I can't sing Delilah. I don't think it's offensive at all, I get a mental image of a man carefully placing his knob into her upturned hand and it always makes me smile!

Id rather have my little girl sing anything than the moronic 'united united united united.....' that the morons at the theatre of plastic can just about manage.

I notice that when my 12 year old sings delilah she just hums the 'dick' word and sings the rest. It always makes me smile that she censors herself ;D

Well the playful sexual reference is surely preferable to the knife version which alludes to and even glamourises wife beating and domestic violence. I grew up with us singing Delilah and I must say I didn't even consider the words till I was about fourteen, old enough to not be troubled by them.

I was swearing on the playground in primary school and im sure the kids today are the same. One word doesnt really make a diffrence it is tradition and will never change

i was taught it at a very young age and it did me no harm, the deal was that with my Dad at stoke i was a stokie and therefore i joined in the songs and when i got home i didnt swear once. anyone with a modicum of parenting skill cant have a problem with the song there are plenty of ways round it.
