If Whelan doesn't start tonight, he's only got himself to blame. I mean, fancy coming on on Sunday, playing really well, hitting the post and then winning us a point in injury time.
Some people never learn.

Boro and Newcastle are both toss. They're both massive, must win games. I'm not saying the others, or indeed any game between now and the end of the season aren't, but let's not pretend tonight's going to be a piece of piss, because it isn't. Boro and Newcastle aren't toss. They're not great Premier League sides but they're hardly on a different level to Bolton. If Newcastle have got anything like a fit forward line, they'll ceratinly have more far more quality than Bolton. We didn't roll WBA, Sunderland (when they were shit), Hull, Fulham or Pompey, so I doubt we'll do so to Castle and Boro. It's going to be bloody difficult tonight, mate. Every game is for us! But there's no point making it more difficult for ourselves. I don't want to walk out of that ground tonight wishing we'd given it more of a go. Bolton will sit back, get men behind the ball. If we do the same and they score, we will then be in serious trouble. If we don't go out to win our home games, we will go down.

Its as simple as this: - • We need to beat Bolton • To do that we need to score more goals than them • Whelan in the team gives us more creativity and more chance of goals • Amdy is currently in better form than Sal • RESULT – Amdy and Glen should start tonight against Bolton Can somebody please forward this to Tone? Kind regards WD Behave WD, it isn't that simple!

If we start with Diao and Faye, then it proves that Sunday taught Pulis absolutely nothing.
Lets not go down the "Bolton will be a tough task" route. Yes, they are a decent side, but given the position we are in with our appalling away record, if we have any ambition to stay up, we need to be attempting to win this game.
That means not "keeping it tight" for 60 minues and hoping it's still 0-0 so that we can actually start playing.
Get at them from the whistle. Play Whelan from the start.

I think Salif is worth his shirt, he does a lot of the nasty stuff. Wheelan and Salif in the middle for me tonight with Lenny on the left and Delap on the right.

key difference between Diao and Whealan....................
Diao gets the ball in the middle of the Villa half and launches the ball back to OUR keeper
Whealan gets the ball in the middle of the Villa half, shoots and scores
Whealan HAS to start against Bolton

I presume that Diao is in the team to keep things tight, but in the four home games that Whelan and Faye started prior to Diao's return against Pompey we conceded just one goal and that was against Manchester United late in the game whilst we were down to ten men and they had FIVE attacking players on the pitch. We also played Liverpool in that run and had to play 45 minutes against Man City with a man down.
I really can't see what else Whelan and Faye could've done in those games? Glenn helped set up the goal against Man City and was very, very unlucky not to win us the game against Liverpool with that free kick.

Come on though Dave - how can you leave the best midfielder at club out of the starting line-up based on those stats alone?

Agree Whelan has to start and I would go with Amdy, thought they looked great against Man City at home and Amdy has been playing really well of late.
As for Diao being the 'best of his kind in the league' I am really not sure about that? Really hope Diao doesnt start to be honest as he makes too many errors for me.

Diao is wank. He may win a few tackles, but he gives the ball away time and again.
He was also completely at fault for Villa's first goal on Sunday.

Football isn't played on paper though, and Newcastle are an absolute shambles of a club at the moment and Southgate seems to keep upsetting his better players and they aren't performing for a variety of reasons. I'm a lot more confident about us when we play them than I am tonight. I'm not saying don't go for it, I'm just saying nonchalant talk of "establishing a comfy two goal lead" suggests a few of us are getting ahead of ourselves.

The same could be said of Kranjcar against Portsmouth as well.

He left Petrov completely unmarked with all the time in the world to pick his spot.

I reckon he'll start with whelan and Diao ! I think Diao is a miles better holding midfield player than Amdy Faye, alright he didn't have his best of games at villa but i'd still rather have him than Amdy in that position. What does salif have that faye doesn't? what does he do? i don't see it

Whelan and Diao for me, but I agree, he can't think he is definitely starting every game.

yeah, on current form its got to be whelan and amdy. but dont forget folks... "salif diao is the best midfielder at this club by a country mile!" We need creativity and Whelan is the man. Diao was good when he first came from Liverpool but not now. He is garbage.

pulis may love the diao/faye partnership but no one else does (i dont think) our midfield should be lawrence and whelan (rory and ethers on the wings) IMO
