Did Whelan influence the game yesterday? A lot has been said about the negative effect of two holding midfielders. I didn't see the game but wondered if he had the desired effect and enough impact to get him self starting on Wednesday (in Pulis's eyes)

He did because he was allowed to get forward, however when he starts he seems to be instructed to sit. I think it was just the situation that allowed whelan to get forward and have some shots

He has to play on Wednesday.
He's the only central midfielder we've got that can actually score goals. He was unlucky with another shot yesterday which came back off the inside of the post.
Whelan and Amdy on Wednesday for me.

I know its stating the obvious but when players take shots on goal sometimes they score! (Percicard aside ) We must take a chance on getting a central midfielder forward at this stage of the season (in our situation).

He was told to have a pop, he is very dangerous on the edge of the box actually.

I'm not trying to make Glenn Whelan out to be some kind of saviour but he is the most creative midfielder we have right now. He was heavily involved yesterday and we saw how his skill against Man City got Etherington in to cross for the winning goal.
I honestly feel it's counter-productive to have two holding, defensively-minded midfielders, either home or away, as it isolates our forward players.

Once we have Ethers back I hope Tone goes with a midfield of: -
Lenny Amdy Whelan Ethers
Especially for the home matches.

This really isn't rocket science. Whelan simply has to play at the expense of one of the two holding players. Glenn is the most creative and best passer of a football at the club right now and assuming that at least some of the time we're going to play through midfield, then Whelan is your man. We've also been sadly lacking in midfield goals this season, something that Oli can occasionally deliver when given the chance, so another reason for starting with him on Wednesday.

Two quality drives from outside the box from Whelan...one a few centimetres from going in the other gave the keeper no chance......other than Whelan have we seen anyone and I mean anyone hit the target this season from outside the box let alone score. Ok Oli v Everton...the only one I can remember....surely its a no brainer

You pick the best right sided player, the best holding player, the best creative player and the best left sided player. I know I'm stating the obvious, but surely it's that fucking simple! See you're not that clever after all WD!

I never declared myself to be that clever Mr Spencer In fact, I would go as far as to call myself a thick bastard but even I can see who should be playing midfield. I would also like to add, life is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what ya gonna get. Kind regards WD

The real crying shame is that virtually every single Stoke City supporter can see it, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the players can see it too.
If Pulis would just let them go out and play their natural game to the best of their ability rather than send them out there terrified of the opposition.
I don't really know what more evidence he needs, setting up to defend hasn't stopped us conceding and when we've been forced to take the game to teams we've scored.

Delap is having a good season and I see him as genuine competition for the defensive role with Amdy, who is also having a very good season. I wouldn’t have Diao in the team and Oli doesn’t seem to figure in Tone’s plans as it stands.

For me the other three midfield places should be nailed on, with Rory and Amdy battling it out for the remaining spot, depending on opposition and if we're home or away etc.
