Anyone going to the Lou Macari night this evening? It's all in aid of the Stanley Matthews Foundation and should be pretty good.

Lou is alway on about Manchester United these days when ever I hear him. The chap has turned out to quite a qunt really. I've met him a few times and he's never been anything other than a decent bloke with a real soft spot for us. So I sincerely hope you're being tongue in cheek.

A brilliant night- Lou talked about his career for about 45 minutes and was a delight to listen to. I'm sure those that have read his book will know, but he was minutes away from signing for Liverpool. Shankly scared the crap out of him though and he was quickly persuaded by Pat Crerand (who, for some reason was watching Liverpool v Bolton that night) to join Manchester United. His biggest regret in football was leaving West Ham. He was worried about dragging their name through the mud after the Swindon 'bonuses scandal' so jumped ship, joining Birmingham. Despite promises of good backing by Brum's chairman, it didn't materialise and he resigned, joining Stoke. He talked fondly of his time in The Potteries- loving the unique atmosphere of the Vic and having a good relationship with Coates, Humphreys and Potts. The same couldn't be said for Jez Moxey though He seemed proud to have reserected the careers of Mike Sheron, Mark Stein and Ian Cranson (to name a few) and was very thankful of Peter Coates to allow him to join Celtic. As we know, it didn't really work out for him up there but he was delighted to say that he never lost at Ibrox. The first game they won and the second game they drew. In the second game, the Celtic chairman refused to allow Celtic fans to line the pockets of Rangers (after Rangers fans had ripped up seats at Parkhead) so Lou and his boys went to Ibrox with no support!! Having arrived under supervision of a bodyguard who was "shitting it", John Collins gave Celtic the lead, but a late equaliser by the home side left Lou "wanting to get out of the ground as quickly as possible"! He was dead against the move to the Britannia but does now admit that our only hope of survival is to continue our excellent home form. Lou certainly didn't seem too happy about the current state of football. Wages are out of control, and players are too. We all know that Southampton's chairman Rupert Lowe is a bit of a tosser but I didn't know that every Friday he will fax the manager his side and if it is different on the Saturday, the manager will be summoned to his office on a Monday morning!! Like I said, a brilliant night, topped off by a funny comedian. Well worth going along to, and all for a great cause. The Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation seems to be really helping people in both the Stoke-on-Trent area, and up in Blackpool.

;D
Forgot to mention something else. He was due to become Chelsea boss and had agreed with Ken Bates to be the gaffer. However, he turned his back on them when Bates insisted on Bobby Campbell being Lou's assistant.
Lou wanted his own assistant so walked away, and Campbell took the job.
