A big round of applause for Labour Councillor Mike Barnes. When the whole city needs to behind the team, he decides to dob us into the Audit Commission over the Stadium deal. www.whydelilah.co.uk/news/18_Feb_2009/Grounds+for+concern+over+stadium+deals.htmlThe citizens of S-O-T thank you for looking out for our best interests. We understand that wringing a couple of extra quid from an organisation that has brought more joy and prestige to the population of the City than the council ever has needs to take top priority. If only Ted Smith were around to set this defender of the people straight. Anyhow, thank Mr Barnes yourself by dropping a note to mike.barnes@stoke.gov.uk You may wish to suggest that if they're looking for a few bob at the Civic Hall they could trim it off the c£200k salary they're offering the new Chief Exec.

Not to mention grabbing a few extra quid by flogging a quarter of the South Car Park to a car dealer. Selling many Audi's in this economic climate I wonder?

It's not the clubs problem. As long as they keep to the agreed deal its the councils problem. Gives the Vale shit something to moan about I suppose. ;D

And WTF has fail market got to do with SCFC? ???
Nothing!
Typical bitter fail fan. They'll probably have a big article about it in The Sentivale!

For us older fans, it was the incompetence of the council that caused us to get relegated in the mid 1980's. The club had agreed to sell a piece of ground at the Vic site to Asda for a supermarket. The amount of money was enough to keep us going for a few years longer in the top division. For reasons that I still can't understand, permission was refused by the council and the result was the holocaust season.
The piece of land is still vacant and has now been joined by the derelict plot that used to be the ground itself. If they had built the Asda, then this area would have been a lot easier to redevelop.

Whinging Vale cunt! The Council are run by monkies and they've realised that they made a fuck up but only at this late date. The council need a bollocking and all need sacking and replacing by competant soles that could organise a piss up in a brewery!

I read the article in the Sentivale and the first thing that sprung to mind was 'sour grapes' ;D
I am presuming this Mike Barnes is a bitter fail fan? How come the article is so one sided even with just comment from an extremely bitter fail fan? What a cunt he's made of himself
It sounds to me like fail are having problems paying back the loan they borrowed so will try anything to get out of it! They go on about Stoke having no interest to pay yet the initial investment by the Council of 3.1 million is being paid back at 99% profit !!
This whole saga smells of grassing shit but that wouldn't surprise me from that scum up the road.
Lets face it who give a shit a deals a deal ;D

The Asda development wasn't given planning permission because the the City Council considered the City Road roundabout to be too close to the development and would've caused traffic problems. It was a massive blow to the club in 1985, but in actual fact had the Asda superstore been built it may well have been the case that the club would've struggled to move away from the Victoria Ground, and that could well have caused the club more long term problems.

Thanks for refreshing my memory Dave, although I still have a grudge with the council over the whole episode. You are quite correct about the road situation. Asda just picked another patch of land alongside the D-road and asked for planning permission. There was just one difference, this land was in Newcastle and the permission came through pronto.
The access to the D-road was much more difficult at Wolstanton and Asda tried to compromise on the Vic site by looking at access from the Campbell Road direction. However, they had to build in Newcastle and Stoke were relegated for 23 years.

Peter Coates has had the council over big time. Now they have realised they are looking for scapegoats.he won`t be the first to do it or the last. The people that run this city are a bunch of clueless muppets. PC must laugh his bollox off when he reads it,just like the day the council sold it to him.Still ,good news for us Stokies. As for the Vale, fook `em.

the same council that blew £15 million on the "Cultural Quarter" if my memory serves me correctly. Also the same council that allowed an illegal market at Vale for so long and the same Vale that charged for car parking on council owned land!!

Vale's market was closed in 1991 after protests from local traders.
1991 - its nearly 20 years ago and they still moan about it!

Personally, I think they should blow another £ 15 million ,as we still need to catch up with The Westlands and Barlaston.....There's a pram on my front lawn the council haven't moved.

What you have to remember about this City Council is that they are incompetent to the extreme. They have year on year let the people of Stoke on Trent down with promises about big ventures and regeneration of the City, none of which have come to fruition. At the end of the day this is a 'quick fix' piece of action that the councillor can chirp about, and the question of incompetence and letting the public down can be dodged with a 'well I did this' type response to reassure the local communities that they are actually doing something.
They will never to anything of note as they are too busy squabbling with each other in the chamber of squables, hence the state of the city. So small victories like this mean the world to them.

What I love about S-O-T Council is that in the recent report about their performance they got told they needed a complete overhaul. Yet the council dismiss this. Hhhmmm I wonder why! ;D

The council should be paying us a monthly premium for all the business we have generated for the City, particularly this year. To bring vale into the equation is just journalists trying to ruffle feathers. They have absolutely no bearing on the profile of this City outside of Stoke so why they are a comparable example I don't know.

Well Mike Barnes can enjoy his last term in office. As a councillor for Longton South he has many constituents who are Stoke City fans. They don't have to vote for him next time around... I know I wouldn't.
