Clarkey or Griff (back in the day). Always remember getting really pissed off with Clarke though as when he cocked up he used to find somone else to blame.

For me it is young Griff EASILY!
However, Clarke not far behind, always rated him v.highly, always thought the bad press he got was unwarrented.

I think this thread does show we have not had a truly great left back, over a lengthy period, since Micky Pejic.
On the right Lee Dixon, Johnny Butler and Mikael Hansson, and even Carl Hoefkens and John Halls, were far better than anything we had on the left.

Clive Clarke agreed he was good but towards the end of his stoke carear he went shit. Danny Higginbothem played well at left back a few times.

I always thought Clive Clarke looked a tad ropey at left back, he improved massivley when we moved him into midfield. I'd say the opposite to Jamo's opinnion, whenever he used to come up against a tricky winger like Scott Murray he would brick himself and hide all game (can't remember much about the Bristol game for the LDV Vans although I was there).
For me, best left back is Griff before we sold him to Newcastle. He used to run the length of the pitch and score crackers!

John Butler Butler no.1 for me, I'm pretty sure he played left back in a few matches from what I can remember in my younger days, he signed in 88 and was highly rated at the club as apparently.
I loved Sandford but I think Griffin in his first spell at the club comes in 2nd with Sandford/Clarkey tied for 3rd. In recent years we seem to be blessed with centre backs at left back.
