I'd have thought it was obviously Griff before he went to Newcastle.

Griff as a 17yr old. Absolute class.

Why a left back??
If so I'd go for either Clarkey, Lee Sandford of Griff (when he plays there).
That thunderbolt versus Coventry a few seasons back was sheer class.

Lee Sandford - ha ha ha
I think I could count the number of passes he made to a Stoke player on the fingers of one hand, if some of you think Higgy just lumps it towards Mama get some of your old video's out and have another look at how poor the football really was back then.
I won't even mention the penalties he gave away from being caught out of position, for me he is right up there with Keith Scott as the best bit of transfer business we have ever done daylight robbery.
Marcus Hall or young Griff, but Higgy does ok for me as well.

Marcus Hall or young Griff, but Higgy does ok for me as well. I don't think Sandy would ever feature highly on the cultered left back list but he was a bloody good and very effective player for us. He was part of an outstanding unit of four and would rightly get a mention when the best left backs of the last twenty years are mentioned. As for the best, as some have already mentioned, Griff as a 17 year old was simply outstanding for us.

Jamo it was an effective unit but for me he was the weakest link.
I have always thought that you build a good team from the back, but it does make you wonder why we haven't done more about it with our current squad. wilko is out of his depth at present and Griff is blowing hot and cold, plus having watched the Ireland game I am not sure that Kelly is going to bring much to the party either!
Still if we can keep eleven players on the pitch we might give ourselves a better chance.

Still if we can keep eleven players on the pitch we might give ourselves a better chance. He probably was the wekest link mate I agree but still a very decent player for us once Lou arrived. Not sure what's happening with Griff, you'd assume Higgy's always going to play when fit and the signing of Kelly may mean Griff's days as a regular starter for us are numbered. As you say mate, it would be good to see us keep the whole complement on to give us the best chance though! I'm sure we'll go a while without a sending off now, I just think we've been on a weird and inexplicable run where red cards are concerned, whilst its annoying I don't think its due to anything that deep rooted.

Fowler (I think his name was), came through the ranks in the Franco Barresi sweeper role but only played at LB for us then went on to greater things at PNE, Gutted when he left

No one mentioned Clive Clarke? Very steady player was Clarkey and got WAY too much stick. Probably his best performance in a Stoke top was at Wembley against Bristol City. Scott Murray was a real threat for them but Clarkey put in a great showing and Murray hardly had a kick. Good servant but not a patch on Griff in his first spell.

John Gidman? (or did he play RB) Brian Rice (slowest player ever to play wingback) Ashley Grimes
God we been blessed with some great players over the years.
Cliff Carr wins it for me though; I'll never forget Leeds away 4-0 down and Carr diving to his right across goal to save the ball and the ref waving play on pisser!!
