Graham Shaw showed a lot of promise in the early part of his career but failed to live upto it.Scoring against Huddersfield on his debut, always nice to see a local lad come good.Who would have thought after that goal he would be getting verbal from Stokie's playing against us at Preston.Fair play to him though i remember him scoring a winner for Preston at the Vic and he never celebrated. Was glad to see him return but never really lived upto his early promise.

I always thought Mark Birch would make it good. He looked a half decent for the reserves but was never quite able make that step up. Ended up at Carlisle then Gretna didnt he?

Could we class players that were good but not the legends we thought they would be? If so, imo, Shilton never impressed me enough to be worth what we paid.

Defo Dean Crowe. Also told when he was younger, Gareth Owen had massive potential and was going to be huge. Ah well, never mind.

Heres one for the older supporters Kevin Sheldon. He started as a very promissing young winger, but suffered a very bad injury and never came back to play at the level we all thought he could.

My old man was good mates with him.. broke his leg terribly playing (let me think) Leeds? From Leek i beleive.

Bomber Sheldon would have made it...........very much like Kevin Keen or Luke Chadwick did.

Funnily enough he has just been mentioned on my ''Stokies we thought would never amount to anything but have'' thread! ;D Call Me Blonde but i dont understand that I started two threads, one for ''Ex Stokies we thought would make it big but haven't'' and one for ''Ex Stokies we never thought would ammount to anything but have.'' Ben Foster's been mentioned on both.

Adam Rooney? You thought he was gonna be big? Yeah, he scored four times in his first 200 or so minutes of football for us! I remember us playing Millwall at home in the FA Cup in January 2007 and everyone was singing his name wanting him to be brought on. He was put under too much pressure too young IMO.

Dean Crowe and Kris Commons for me - I think Commons could have made the grade if he hadn't suffered from injuries and if he had stayed with us. I thought Peter Thorne would play in the Prem one day - I also think it was injuries (and signing for Cardiff) which killed his potential.

Commons and Halls for me.
Did anyone actually believe Rooney had that much potential, aside from bring_back_muggleton?

Peter Fox, a great goalkeeper and if not for a back injury I think when we got relegated would have gone to someone like West Ham at the time, not that they are bigger than us just they were in a league higher, and Foxy should have played for England but for some reason that flying pig (shilton) stole all the limelight bloody shocking

Ian Moores
Biggest disappointment though for me was Mark Chamberlain - he could have had everything the game had to offer. When we won in Brazil 2-0 and Barnes scored his wonder goal, it was Chamberlain who was named man of the match!
