Have you ever heard TP mention this in a post match interview about Stoke??? Do you think he ever mentions it to the players? With possession rates averaging approx. 30% per match, might be worth a mention

Give us England's starting eleven and he might try it.
A bit of a pointless comparison really.

We do need to keep the ball more though because it is shocking and just invites pressure back at us especially when Mama is not playing.

If we had a midfield of Lawrence Etherington Delap/Daio and Whelan then you'd imiagine we'd begin to play football a bit more. For some reason though Pulis doesn't want to play Lawrence- why? I don't think anyone knows. Although when Sidibe returns I think our long-balls will become a lot more successful.

when we are winning games we need to kill the game. just like man u did when they went 1-0 against us at brit. they just knocked the ball between their defenders for 10 minutes or so.
must admit though engalnd played like wba yesterday. kept the ball but kept going backwards and sideways all game. how pointless and boring was that to watch

There's a difference though between tippy tappy bull shit and keeping the ball for more than 3 passes.

It was interesting to hear Martinez last night on 5Live. He said Spain work hard, have the right mentality and treat the ball well. That is why they are successful right now.
Pulis - take note.

In all fairness, I'd say we've got two out of the three covered. Not bad for a team with nowhere near the same quality of players Martinez was talking about.

At home I would say that was true, away I'm not so sure. Only one out of three.

Give us England's starting eleven and he might try it. A bit of a pointless comparison really. I have to disagree, At Premiership level (supposedly the best league in the world) players should be able, or at least be trying, to maintain possession. You can probably count on one hand the amount of times we have put half a dozen passes together this season. At this level it is a game of possession, you can win only very few games holding the ball for only 30% of the time. Allowing opposition to hold possession puts great pressure on the defence, no wonder we give late goals away, the players are knackered by then, chasing the opposition around for most of the game. We concede a goal and the manager blames the players!!!! No mention of the system.

at home we look fine with the ball, its away from home where we panic and lump the ball forward hoping for something, rather than keeping the ball and creating something, see the difference? One involves the ball coming straight back at us and us conceeding, the other involves bieng calm and creating chances, Pulis take note............

We concede a goal and the manager blames the players!!!! No mention of the system. If this were a fair and equal league that would be true but it's not. Almost every club in the league (bar probabley Hull) are technically better than us. That is not just their attacking players but their defence and midfield as well- the players that are attempting to stop us keeping possession. Our by-passing the midfield was actually working well for us until Sidibe (our main target man) got injured- since then we've gone downhill. The problem arose by Pulis insisting on picking players for that role that simply weren't made for it (Kitson, Cresswell, Fuller). As I've said above, I'd be all for playing a bit more football if we got Lawrence, Etherington, Whelan and Delap in midfield but until that happens (and with two of them suspended and another being supposedly out-of-favour that looks a long way off) I see the long-ball as our most potent weapon, especially now Sidibe is back. And if we play that way, we're never going to beat anyone on possession.

Sven used to use the same comment after we went out of every tournament.
It sums up the state of the football development in this country.

Fetishistic obsession with sideways passing is a bit pointless. West Brom do this then hoof it long, a la England.
But watching Spain's movement and technical ability to split defences with a well weighted pass was a real pleasure. The way they pressured the ball when we had it was just as valuable if less pleasing to watch.
Their whole front 6 were just excellent.

What do they do all week??? Our passing is woeful, but is that because the players are crap or do they just neglect this stuff in training???

Did you notice there goalkeeper never kicked the ball down the pitch he always rolled to the nearest player, Now what did James do every time he had it kick it straight down the pitch thus giving it straight back to them.If your goalkeeper kicks most balls down the pitch at every opportunity that ball then becomes a 50.50 ball . When we had Alan Hudson and Peter Shilton in goals for us we always played from the back thus keeping possession I can never under stand why most keepers always kick it down the pitch ???

England reminded me a lot of Stoke last night - giving the ball away and invitiing pressure from a set of better players.
At Stoke, I'm realistic that this is because we've been out of the money pot Prem for so long, but with England it's just embarrassing.
The media really does over-rate English players enormously.

England were the luckiest side ever to win the world cup. That useless c5nt scored a hat-trick and was knighted despite only scoring twice.

I was there last night, and funnily enough during the 2nd half I turned to my mate (a non Stokie) and said. it's like watching Stoke tonight...
To be fair to England, the Spanish were class, we coped in the 1st half but got dicked for parts of the 2nd.
A good trip all in all, the Spanish created a brilliant atmosphere, especially as it was an open air stadium. Talking of which, the stadium was a complete shithole and would be instantly closed down if it was in England, nice city though.

Brian Clough said " if we have possession then they can't score a goal" simple really.
