John Nurse, currently at Ryman Premiership side Sutton United, has been linked with a move to Stoke. We may have already have made a bid for him. Apparently he's been invited up to look around, and the Sutton fans expect him to be gone in the next couple of weeks. I've not seen him play (although I have seen Sutton play this season), but I know that he's just recently broken into the 1st team and scored in 6 consecutive games in Nov - Dec, and has scored 9 in total. www.amberpla.net/03/html/read.php?f=1&i=4144&t=4144#reply_4144

He will, presumably be "one for the future" and introduced gradually to the first team squad via the bench. Looks more and more likely that Greenacre will be on his way shortly.

I think we'll have to be patient with him.

Hopefully he will add an injection of pace to the squad.
They're getting worse...

Everyone a cracker! He's very fast apparently, but as fornside says, more likely to be more of a 'one for the future'.

Yeah, but he had 'one hit wonder' written all over him.

can't hurt to have a look at him in the reserves on trial if anything comes from it... seems nothing came from the Craig McAllister stories from last year, so until anything is official looks like we're stuck speculating...

Looks like he's only been playing at Ryman League standard for a couple of months?.

We'll obviously need to 'blood' him gently, nurse him along so to speak ;D What we really need is a 'bandage' for the wound in our midfield

Post by Rex on Jan 27, 2004 18:49:33 GMT
But do you think a bandage in our midfield would be any use if we are STITCHED up?

Somehow Rex I just don't see you as Mary Poppins. More like the matron as played by Hattie Jacques?

Don't trust these lower league strikers. Look at little CHris. Same would happen if we signed Trundle. A great lower league striker but nout more

It'd be stupid to write off EVERY lower league striker just because Chris Greenacre turned out to be cack. There are undoubtedly some gems to be found in Divisions 2, 3 and non-league, it's just about finding the right ones!
After all, didn't Liverpool sign Ian Rush and Kevin Keegan from lower league teams? (Chester and Scunthorpe?) I'm sure there are plenty more examples if anybody can be arsed to think of them. In fact didn't one of our greatest goalscorers, John Ritchie, arrive from Kettering?
There are plenty of strikers who can score bucketloads in the lower divisions who wouldn't have a hope in hell if they were placed in Division 1, but you have to judge each player individually.

agree with Trouserdog, an even more recent example would be Malcolm Christie - from being in the Conference with Nuneaton to £3 million rated Premiership striker with Derby, in one easy step.. Lee Hughes, Jason Roberts, Barry Hayles - examples are there, about time we hit lucky with one. Taking a look at them in the reserve side won't do any harm, if we ever do strike gold ???

Worth a gamble, you never know. Ian Wright came from non-league and as much of a tit that he is he was a good player

It's stupid to write off lower league, young strikers, as said above. Both Ian Wright and Stuart Pearce were picked up in the Pub Leagues.
