Had the discussion with my dad on the long journey home: just what formation do we play. I described it as 4-4-1-1.
He described it as 4-2-4.
Thoughts?

An adaption of a 442 with one striker in a (nearly)free role, but has to play deep. It isn't a 4411 as the player behind the striker would be an attacking midfielder in this instance such as Cahill.

I always see it as 4-4-1-1 for a starting point and 4-2-3-1 when we get forward, with the two wide men joining to make the 3.

4-4-1-1
the second 4 consists of 2 holding midfielders and two wide players or MUST be able to carry out knuckledragging duties. The one behind the main striker MUST also carry out the infamous knuckledragging duties.
