DEVELOPER St Modwen is threatening to evict a protester who is camping out on the old Victoria Ground. Dave Barker moved on to the site on New Year’s Day as part of his campaign to see the former home of Stoke City turned into a park. The 48-year-old wants to pitch his tent at the site for 10 years so he can claim adverse possession, or squatter’s rights. Under the Land Registration Act of 2002, a squatter can apply to be registered as the owner of the land they have been living on after 10 years. But landowner St Modwen – which has planning permission to build hundreds of homes on the land – reserves the right to evict Mr Barker, who is camping behind Stoke Minster Primary School. Mr Barker said: “I want to see a park linked to the school so we can provide the school with better facilities. “The reaction has been very positive and there have been no complaints from people that I am here. “The police have come over a couple of times because they heard someone was camping here but their concern was the cold and that I might have nowhere to live.” Divorced and unemployed Mr Barker, who has a permanent address in King Street, Fenton, hopes his six years in the Army will help him cope with the cold. He added: “I have never backed down from a challenge and this needed to be done. “If I have to be here for 10 years then I will be here for 10 years. “I need an expert who can give support and information on adverse possession. I want someone who can give me some legal information to stop St Modwen from evicting me and carrying on with what they want to do.” I'm with him.

I'd love see the Vic site as a park - be great see football played there again - albeit with a fly away. ;D

Saw that article earlier on actually; would be great if the Vic ended up as a park, as opposed to some plastic-fantastic development made out of plaster board and chewing gum.

stoke is the only one of the towns without a park. they should put a decent statue in the centre spot too. or reinstate a football pitch for kids to use

How about we move the Brit to where the Victoria Ground was & call it The New Victoria Ground or something even though it would cost millions to do so lol

As sad as we all were to leave the Victoria Ground, the site is now owned by St Modwen as part of the deal that took us up to our current abode. I wouldn't be happy if someone moved into my back garden and then sought advice as to how they could claim adverse possession. I don't think anyone else on here would be too chuffed with that either. The guy obviously has issues or nothing better to do.

I agree, that place was the stuff of legends, but I never saw Prem football there! Romance to seeing Steino/Foley/Beeston slam them in there, but there are new memories to be had at our new ground. I think it should be a park, with a bit of original Boothen End terracing where people can stand and reminisce about 11,000 people mentals in that beautiful old ground

Now Mr Coates and the club itself are a bit more flush, wouldn't it be nice if Stoke City could do a deal to buy that land back from St Modwen (new house building is hardly in demand at present, is it?) and develop it as a park, including some sort of fitting memorial to all the great players we saw, and all the great times we had, at that grand old ground.

Modwen own the land so he should fuck right off.

romantic notion I know, but I was hoping we would buy this land back and put our new training complex and acadamy facilities on the old Vic site.
Not happening now but just a passing thought

Have no fear Stokies, the Brit will probably only make it another 40 years, and st mowden still won't have built anything there, we can swap them for the old Brit site.

Whatever you think of his views, he must be a fucking nutter. How the hell does he think hes going to last 10 years.
Irrespective of his cause being close to the hearts of us Stokies, the head says if it was fucking Gypos there would be an outcry.

Don't shoot me down here but maybe this bloke is just trying to highlight the fact that this land has not been developed for over a decade, If the owners wanted the land then why the fuck don't they something with it, I'm sure it's not too great for the local residents seeing a waste land from their window. This fucking useless council should be pressing the owners to get it developed

I'm gonna go break into his house, live there for 10 years while he is away, and then claim it for myself! If I have to be there for 10 years then I will be there for 10 years. however, I reckon that I will need an expert who can give me support and information on adverse possession. I want someone who can give me some legal information to stop Dave Barker from evicting me and coming back when he wants to.

Didn't modwen want to originally put a supermarket on it? The council wouldn't let them and hey presto they spend ages fighting about it. Eventually decide to put houses on it and now the market is fooked. Can't see what would have been wrong with a supermarket myself. They eventually allow one not 300 yards away.Couldn't make it up i tell ya. ???
