Pulis wants to add experience and quality to the centre of his defence and midfield, while another striker remains on his agenda following last week’s failure to add Charlton’s Andy Gray to the January captures of Matthew Etherington from West Ham and James Beattie from Sheffield United for an initial combined fee of £4m.
Just noticed this bit of the story too. If Spinksy's maths is correct, this suggests that Etherington came for an initial fee of about £1.5m (if Beattie did actually cost an initial £2.5m)?

As others have said, reference to another centre back is a little strange, given the far more pressing need for full back cover, and some more pace out wide/up front.
Could it be that he thinks at least three (Sonko, Cort, Davies) of the million pounds plus centre backs he has bought are not up to the job now? If I was Coates, I'd tell him to sell one of them if he wanted to buy a replacement. Sonko was a major bollock dropped and whoever scouted him wants shooting.

This doesn't make sense at all. Buy a left back. And Hyypia no thanks, we don't need any old players at CB either, we need to get a younger team. Our average age scares me. There was a thing in the Sun on Monday that showed the oldest player to play for each club this season. Pompey were top with James the oldest player in the league but we were 3rd bottom(Sorenson 32), with only Boro(Riggott 28) and another team I can't remember below us. Ours players it seems could have a lot left in their tanks yet

Grapey, I read in The Sentinel the day after Beattie moved, it was an initial £2 million

potters, Sheff U must have been desperate to get him off the wage bill to let him go for that! It looks a better and better deal, despite his huge wages.
Couldn't agree more, Jezza. We should try and get £1m in by selling Sonko, Davies or Cort if Pulis has no faith in them even being 4th choice CB.

Out of those three Grapey, Sonko would be top of my list.

Me too, knowlesy.
But, because he actually played for Reading in August, aren't we effectively stopped from selling him until the summer due to the 3 clubs-in-a-season rule?

Good point. I think we can still loan him out though, can't we? Despite a worrying start, I wouldn't get rid of Davies as I think he has potential and I rate Cort higher than Donko.

Incredible how just a handful of games can put a player on the scrapheap. What an absolute criminal waste of money Sonko was.

Sonko was a panic buy. TP did get this one wrong. Imagine a CB pairing of Sonko and Paul Williams !!

The thought of buying yet another CB is crazy! All of the following players are capable of playing somewhere in defence (regardless of how good they actually are)...
Ab Faye, Shawcross, Higgy, Cort, Davies, Sonko, Dicko, Wilko, Amdy Faye, Griffin, Matteo. You could even include the likes of Pugh & Delap at full back.
Fair enough, some of those are clearly not good enough to play in a CB role but likes of Davies, Cort & Sonko SHOULD provide enough cover over the course of this season. We certainly don't need anymore!
For me, the positions we should be looking at in terms of strengthening the team are as follows, in order of current need...
1. Creative attacking midfielder 2. Left Back 2. Right Midfield (to me of equal importance with Left Back). 3. Striker 4. Central Defender 5. either left mid, right back or another attacking midfielder.

I disagree, if you check the official site it has a report on Diao that mentions Sidibe and Cort, both are recovering but still several weeks away from being considered for the first team. We have a centre back pairing of Faye (1 booking away from suspension) and Shawcross (who seems to have a long term back problem that could see him easily miss out for a few week. ) This leaves us with: Davis (no where near fit enough for regular first team football after recovering from a serious injury this year) Cort (Out injured for a few more weeks/another month?) Sonko (After Blackburn I think Pulis lost all faith in him and wont feature unless we have no one else) Pugh is too small and lightweight for left back in this league, and Delap plays midfield. Dicko is out on loan, Wilko is playing well but may not be enough to see us stay up, Amdy Faye hasn't played in defense for us so is a risk and I can't believe you mentioned Matteo?! . Yep, Higgy can cover CB well enough but who do we play left back? Then if Griffin goes over who at right? Both Griff and Higgy have knocks as well at the moment and we need cover. If we want to stay up then an experienced CB to cover is needed. After reading the Diao article on the official site you can see why he's after a CB, CM and another forward. Still, I'd love us to sign a decent left back so that we could free up Higgy to play CB, but Faye/Shawcross are my 1st choice. It's not easy and I guess we don't have the money to cover every position we need strengthening in.

Could the cental midfielder be Ben Watson? Warnock says another Premier League club (along with Middlesbrough) are interested. With the Soares experience, I doubt Pulis would tip his toes back into Palace waters but you never know... www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11688_4823018,00.html

We need to do the following:
Get in a centre back, a left-back, a right-back and a central midfielder. Cort and Sonko are crap cover for centre back, we've got almost no cover on the full backs if Higginbotham is out and we need a Whelan who can tackle and get stuck in (i.e. a good midfielder who can tackle and pass).
Sell Davies, Sonko, Cort and Olofinjana. Wastes of money.

TP likes centre backs playing in the full back positions. A Riggott type of player is on the cards I would think.
For any of our new signings expect there to be two requirements; 1 Prem experience 2 Works 'aaard
Nearly all of TP's singings for the last two years have these factors in common.

Watson is highly rated and was close to a move to the Premier League last summer. He is a box to box type central midfielder and is out of contract in the summer.

Is this the same Ben Watson, who couldn't get in the Palace team earlier in the season? The same Ben Watson who wanted a move, but only Forest were interested? The same Ben Watson who wanted to move to QPR but they weren't interested?
The grass is rarely greener on the other side of the fence. Just because he is new doesn't mean he is better.
Surely we are setting our sights way higher than yet another average Championship player.

I wouldn't class Ben Watson as experienced, which is mentioned in the article. I reckon someone like Dacourt would be ideal in our system. He can stop em and he can play a bit.
Another centre back of the quality of Ab Faye and Shawcross wouldn't go amiss, IMHO.

Of all the Centre Mids that seem to be available at the mo, I would be more than happy to see Dacourt here on an 18 month contract.

a quality CM player is a must for me. We have, by my reconing, nine players already at the club who can play there and its qestionable if any of them are good enough at this level. Of course finding one, and getting him to sign for us, is another matter

if we buy another CB then its a complete waste of money.. shawcross and ab. faye have been solid for the majority of this season and cort/sonko are good back-ups. Full backs are much more needed, both LB and RB.. keep higgy fighting for his place. id prefer a right winger to another CM, or perhaps a CM who can create a lot of chances?.

Radio Stoke have just said Coates has told them there'll be "a maximum of 2 new faces between now and the end of January"
With that in mind, hopefully we definitely will forget about another centre-half!
