Sami Hyypia?

I just can't figure out why CB wouldn't be bottom of our list for strengthening though.
We've bought 6 £1m+ CBs in the past year. Surely, if we're buying a defender, a full-back is the way to go?

Agreed, but it was clear that he wanted another centre back with the Diatta trial. The word 'experienced' would also seem to rule out Ledley...but not Bullard

Wouldn't mind Hyypia at all; still looked the part against us a couple of weeks ago, and assuming Higgy would only be shifted to the centre of defence as cover, there's nobody to challenge Ryan for his place. Wouldn't want him on any longer than an eighteen month contract though.
Surprised there's no mention of full-backs; we really need to strengthen there.

If we sign another striker oyu'd have to imagine either Kitson or Ric would be looking for a move as we wouldn't be able to keep those two plus Beattie and another striker happy whereas you would imagine Vince, Cressie and Mama would be more inclined to be happy as a squad player than the aforementioned two

Got to be two full backs and a quality midfielder surely?

While I share the 'unfathomable' interpretation of looking for another centre half, when we already have so many.... Isn't it nice to be a buying club? ;D We have a squad of around 23 first team players, and we're looking to add to it, without necessarily selling anyone (other than Pericard or loaning out some young players). I just hope we don't wake up in June and the dream is over. If we go down, we'd have to expect to lose maybe Sorensen, Shawcross, Ab Faye, a couple of midfielders and a striker. I still think we could compete with what's left mind you, plus some loan deals

Other than the Shawcross and Faye partnership of late, who would you be confident of coming in if one is injured or suspended ?

I'd still like a young pacey winger come in. If Ethers did a hamstring or something we'd be back to square one.

That is a good question - I suppose if we got an outstanding CB in then you'd have to say good move, it's not like our defence is watertight now. Best answer: Wilko at RB, Griff at LB and Higgy at CB. Cort has looked ok but he's still injured isn't he?

Surely with Liverpool actually challenging for the title, and the fact that hyypia played only as recently as our last home game (if not last night), there is absolutely zero chance of him coming to us?

Simo Griff Higgy Oli Cort Whelan Liam Soares Cressie Ric Mama Kitson Pugh Vince Shawx Salif Amdy Davies Tonge Delap Abdoulaye Ethers Beattie Wilko Sorenson Dicko Sonko
27 players there
also got DSLH, Grocott, Thorley, Wedders, J.Phillips, D.Phillips, Shotts, Buxton, Matteo but wouldn't expect any appearances from any of these this season

OK 27 not 23: Pericard Soares and Dicko are either crap or not available mind! Let's call it 24.

I do agree with you (he did play last night) but we have been linked with him over the past ten days so, presumably, he is still on our radar.

How many top CBs can we carry though?
If we're using the Shawcross-Faye partnership as the starting point, I'd hope that Higgy was next in line, which would mean Griffin, as it stands, switching to LB.
After that, I agree that there's a big drop-off in proven quality.
But Davies was runaway player of the year for Southampton in that position, and Cort has done okay there this season (although I'm not a big fan of his) For a club like us, I think either are okay as 4th choice CB, when we have bigger concerns elsewhere in the squad.
Another CB would seem to make Sonko 6th choice CB?
I think buying a left-back would make much more sense.

A left back does indeed make a lot more sense.
I would say that cort is probably behind sonko in the pecking order though (due to cost not ability).

iTs a bit of a surprise another CB....he does like them doesn't he. Clearly he thinks and most would agree that Cort and Sonko are not up to the job and he's right so injury or more likely suspension to Ryan and/or Ab and we are back to a dodgy backbone. I agree Higgy is the best alternative but its again moving players around rather than keeping them in a settled position..... I think he just doesn't rate the fullback position as key and we know if he could he would have 4 CB as the last line. I suppose the way we play means we can get away with average fullbacks.....Benitez uses Carragher at fullback often and sacrifices attacking options from fullbacks.............personally I would love to see a pacy right back if we continue to play Rory at right side..But it seems unlikely. But please some creativity in CM.

Cant see Hyypia going anywhere now. I've heard that Liverpool are going to give him another year now, then hes going to do his coaching badges at Liverpool after that contract runs out. Cant see the benefit of him being sold for them anyway. Wont make much money by selling him and still getting in the first team/squad. Played last night as well.

This doesn't make sense at all. Buy a left back.
And Hyypia no thanks, we don't need any old players at CB either, we need to get a younger team. Our average age scares me.

I think Pulis is maybe a bit wary of Shawcross's inexperience as the business end of the season draws close. He's playing brilliantly at the moment, but when the pressure really arrives he's got to either rely on him or have someone he totally trusts to bring into that position. There's always the chance that either Shawcross or Faye could pick up injuries or suspensions as well so we've got to cater for every eventuality.
Personally, I wouldn't be happy relying on the likes of Cort and Sonko* at any stage of the run in, so I can live with him targeting another central defender.
* Yes, I know Pulis signed them both, but that's another subject.

His balls are on the line if we go down, so he's got to make the calls but....
The signing of a competent Premier League left-back would leave us with a pecking order at CB of :
Ab Faye Shawcross Higginbotham Davies Sonko Cort
And they have all cost £1m+ in the last year.
If he doesn't trust Davies, Sonko or Cort to be our 4th choice CB, who'd only have to step in if 2 CBs were unavailable, it's a bit of a worry - especially if you contrast that with the relative weakness in other areas of the pitch.

perhaps TP has no intention of playing Higgy or Davies at CB.
that leaves Ab Faye,Ryan,Sonko & Cort as out & out CB's
2 of those could be improved upon, maybe 1 of those (Cort?) will go?
another CM though? imho we could do with another (pacey really) winger (either side but pref'ly right).
another striker,Camara,Dindane,a Man Citeh player? 1 of the current lot would have to go?

I would say OK to CB if he had added LB to the CM and striker. It won't be long before we lose Abdy for a game because he'll be suspended, as he's just one yellow card from that.

Really dont get why he wants another centre back, buy a left back, then we have Higgy, ABD, Shawcross, with Sonko and Cort for back up.
