Micky Bernard used to 'protect' the back four. When you think the back four was Marshy, Bluto, Smithy and Pej, it shows just how tough he was.
I'd heard beforehand that whilst they were waiting in the Wembley tunnel before the game he told the Chelsea players exactly what was going to happen to them once the game started. He sort of confirms this in the interview.
If you watch a re-run of the final you will see Micky Bernard. He is the one who runs up behind any Chelsea player who comes near him and hacks them down.
He was never really appreciated by the fans and was the first member of the cup winning team to leave. I think Waddo thought that Mahoney was a better prospect.
Mike Bernard - a Stoke legend!

If you think Bernard was not appreciated then I fear you have started your weekend already!

If you think Bernard was not appreciated then I fear you have started your weekend already! When I say not appreciated, what I mean is that he never had the sort of following that Banks, Smith, Conroy, Greenhoff and Ritchie had. For example I never remember us singing a song about Bernard. However, he was an integral part of our early 70's cup team and played his part in the development of our club into genuine title challengers. Waddo had Mahoney with Stewart Jump in reserve. He let Bernard go and we signed Hurst and Robertson. I have the utmost respect for Mike Bernard and did not intend to do him an injustice!

He was apreciated but perhaps was a bit more low key. He went on to have a very successful career at Everton, a club that signed Pejic, Heathy and Bracewell from us. Nice to see that if they came along today we could tell them to piss off

What a cracking interview. Can remember the night well, got absolutely drenched walking back to Picadilly for train back to Nottigham for college.
Like the comment about being the only player to score a penalty against BM.
Mike could mix it with the best!!!!

Great clip--great memories of old Trafford in the rain and the Hammers fans lobbing either cushions or seats onto the pitch at the end.

Thanks for that Stokieuk. Mike could indeed mix it with the best - and the toughest. Up there with Chopper Harris, Norman Hunter, Tommy Smith, Billy Bremner etc. Imagine having 5 Stoke lads in the side now, the whole defence made up of local lads - backed up by the England keeper!! Wonder what the MOTD pundits would make of Ian Hutchinson's throw today. Probably be the best thing since sliced bread with it being Chelsea!

I was at the West Ham SF and Wembley final. Mike B was an essential part of the team, as our midfield hard man. I can't see how Waddo would have thought Mahoney would have replaced him as JM was more of an attacking player.
To me, MB's sale to Everton was a massive blow. This came after we'd been at or about the top of the table. We needed one new player to make us real championship contenders. I remember listening to the sports news every night, expecting us to sign someone, and then I heard MB had gone. Our championship hopes went with him. For me, this was the sainted Waddo's biggest mistake and I've always wondered just why on earth he did it.
Great interview, though, and many thanks for posting it.

Bernard was as hard as nails, and totally committed to the cause. He was also a very good footballer. A defence containing Marsh, Pej. Bluto, Smithy and Bernard. Believe me, there is not a team today feieding such a formidable and fearsome defence.

Believe me, there is not a team today feieding such a formidable and fearsome defence. 'Leader' up front was no shrinking violet either. I remember him throwing a ManU defender into the Butler Street paddock. Ref booked him for it. We won at Ipswich one week and during the after match interview their manger admitted they were scared of some of our players. The best thing about them all was that they could play a bit as well and never gave less than 100%.

Would be good if tomorrows team told Chelsea what was going to happen to them, although they'd probably get carded for doing that nowadays.

No wonder he gives Banksy a lot of credit................after all he got him out of the shit in the League Cup Final after that dreadful back-pass!!! No worries though Mike, it's all but been forgotten now, although it might have been a different kettle of fish had we lost because of it!!!
