Why not spend 5-10 million on their academy and plan for the future. Man united proved that you are better off bringing the talent through when they were so successfull with the likes of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes etc. Then you can add a bit of quality after.

Man Utd and Liverpool built up their reputation by winning things and building up a fan base world wide thus bringing in investment off the back of success. What Chelsea and Man City are doing is just selling to big backer with no history to speak of.
Blackburn were funded by Jack Walker who was and until his death Blackburn through and through and did what every fan in the world would do if they could.

The only thing Man City will ruin, will be themselves. And I can't wait.
They'll forfeit their marvellous youth players (wouldn't mind some of them) who won't get a smell. They'll be replaced by intermittent performers who truly couldn't care less. Kaka? Why would he, while at the start of his peak yrs, move to a club who won't be in Europe (if ever) for at least two seasons? If it's for money, then that brings a lot of problems. Moodiness will be the least of them.
If a top GK arrives, the likes of Hart will move on, ad infinitum...... As those on here will know, I never envied Chelsea when they hit the jackpot, knowing, fro starters, that they needed a miracle manager. They actually got one, and well done to him. But their supporters aren't jabbering excitedly, right now, are they?
As for the decent Mark Hughes, who promised not to spend absurd sums, on players, he must be squirming, as the owners go mad.
Not thanks. I'm happy with our way.

I'm now very clear about who I'd like to go down with West Brom (pretty, but ineffective) and West Ham (administration, 10 point deduction). Money has killed the game already, this will destroy any future. It always pleases me when Chelsea come second or lower, given the money they've had. We desperately need someone brave enough to set transfer guidelines and wage caps as this story today is ridiculous. If it wasn't so cold and dark I'd have thought it was April 1st!

In the 70's Liverpool bought anything that moved. Players who had been stars at other clubs spent months in their reserves to try and get to the first team. This was the start of the ruination of football with one club dominating as never before. Money became the name of the game.
ManU took this to a further extreme through their (and Arsenal's) chairman encouraging the formation of the Prem where the rich get obscenely rich and everyone else can get stuffed. Man City have joined Chelsea on this monetary bandwagon.
Imagine if at the start of the Football League, the big 12 had insisted all revenue went to them and smaller clubs were starved of finance. The game would never have taken off and this board might now be devoted to Stoke City tiddlywinks team.
Greedy clubs are destroying our game. It is short term gain for them and long term pain for everyone. Just as the banks have witnessed a financial meltdown, football will do likewise at some point - half the Prem grounds have many empty seats now. When the crash comes there will be some big name victims. Look at some of the banks that have got into serious trouble.
I think football is facing its biggest ever crisis, partly because those who run the game can't see it coming.
Anyone for tiddlywinks?

If the Russian pulled out of Chelsea, if the banks needed the money owed by ManU then perhaps something would happen. Until then they keep on getting richer and everyone else gets poorer.
Thank goodness we have Uncle Peter!

Without disagreeing with any opinions expressed in this thread it is worth remembering that every time a transfer fee threshold has been crossed football fans everywhere have been outraged. It was true for the first:
£100 footballer £1000 footballer £10,000 footballer £100,000 footballer (Allan Ball, between English Clubs anyway) £1,000,000 (Trevor Francis?) £10,000,000 (no idea)
So it was only a matter of time before we were talking £100,000,000.
Just a thought!

If 100 million quid is paid for footballer and it will be sooner or later, it's no more the end of football than when Trevor Francis or Gary Birtles went for a million (or even Michael Robinson who was sold fro nearly a million when he was 19 or something). The idea that 'Money has been killing the game' has been around forever. remember the outcry when Kevin Keepan was getting 2 grand a week or something.

They've shot themselves in the foot now. No club is going to accept any offers from them for players without receiving silly money, hence the 3rd rejection for bellamy. 100m was a stupid offer and they will now reep what they sow.
