You shouldn't confuse the Youth Team losing with an idea that it contains no prospects.
It isn't about having an effective team. It is about one or two making it through to the first team.
Man U lost at home to mighty Carlisle last night and they have "prospects" that cost more than our first team.

Last month West Brom youth lost to ManU 3-1 and last two ManU goals were own goals. The difference at this level is not so great. However, players in ManU youth squad from Aus, Italy, Sweden, in fact all over the place and value way beyond normal levels.
If any youth squad can get two players into the first on a regular basis, they've overachieved. Liverpool's youth programme, headed up to recently by Steve Heighway, are amongst the best and on paper the most expensive, but with Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Carragher who all came through the youth ranks of Liverpool FC to prove that locally produced players can develop into world class stars having been groomed by the Reds from an early age, making an exceptional return on investment for the club.
If Stoke can bring on just one or two on this season offering pro contracts and regular football in the coming three or four years, then it's been good for them and the club. The only remaining issue is that of players moving on like "Kris" Commons and the club not getting their just rewards.
